I arrived home to find a message on my answering machine from the chair of the Business department at work. He wants to know what my availability is for the fall semester. It seems he has several sections of the law course that I taught last fall, and he wants to give me first crack at the courses.
WOOHOO!!!!
So, here's the dilemma. I don't know how many sections of Critical Thinking will be offered next semester. The course is a first semester course for freshman, so there will be many sections. But since I am an adjunct, I have to fight with my fellow adjuncts for whatever scraps are left.
The business chair want me to call ASAP. So, should I contact the chair of my department first and explain the situation, hoping he has some idea of what will be offered and ask for sections? Or do I call the business chair back and find out exactly how many sections he is planning and the time and days for each, and then go to my chair?
I don't want to alienate my chair who hired me in the first place. The reason why I taught the law class was because the person who was supposed to teach it quit three days before the beginning of the semester. It just happened that the business chair and my chair were discussing the situation and my chair mentioned my name as a possible replacement. I have a good relationship with both chairs and like to keep it that way. Ideally, I would like to teach both courses.
Which leads me to another question...
At what point do you start lobbying for a full time position? OK, I have taught at this school for almost a full academic year, which is not a significant amount of time. I do have prior experience under my belt, which should carry some weight. My evals for last semester were stellar, nothing less than a 4 out of 5 for my CT classes (including the class from hell) and my law class. I could make a good case for any research, as I have some ideas. But, I don't know if I should wait and get more ducks lined up or strike while the iron is hot.
OK academic gurus...share your genius.
- Sweet merciful crap, it's COLD! I know it's bad when the Boy does even want to go out, or when he does, he does his business and runs back in the house, without stopping to bark at stuff or roll around in the snow.
- Wow.. it's 10 degrees with a wind chill of -10. Heat wave!!!!
- I cancelled my 8 AM class. My joints just cannot function in this kind of weather. I also figured that many students would be a no show. I sent an email to my class last night telling them I was going to cancel. Hopefully, they listened when I told them to check their email when we have weather issues.
- I am getting some work done at home. I have to grade the diagnostic essays for my Writing class, so this is a great time to do it without interruption.
- Husband and I took the Boy to Saturday playgroup at his daycare. It worked out much better for the Boy. There were fewer dogs, which allowed him to play. He made some new friends and played very nicely with them. Only once did he have to go to doggie time out for inappropriate behavior.
- I did speak to the owner-head trainer about the incident. She told me that the guy and his wife are not regulars at playgroup. When they do come with their dog, they do not listen to anything she tells them to do with their dog. She doesn't want to "ban" them if the attend only once in a while. She is hoping that they will stop coming altogether. She was not upset with me at all with respect to my reaction to the incident. That made me feel so much better.
Stay warm everyone. This too shall pass...I hope!
Husband and I just booked our spring break trip. We are going to the Bahamas. We went there on our honeymoon in 1992. I guess things have changed a lot since then. We are staying here .
WOOHOO! Mid March can't come soon enough. Plus it's 6 degrees outside with a wind chill of -20!
My Composition students began working on their first essay assignment. Today was a brainstorming session where the students worked in groups to discuss their topics and whether the topic was suitable for the assignment. I noticed one girl who was just sitting there, absolutely paralyzed with fear. I asked her if everything was OK. She told me that she is absolute afraid of writing.
I decided it would be best to talk to her in the hall because I could see tears in her eyes. After some probing, I found out that she has felt this way since the seventh grade. When I tried to get to what specifically sparked her fear, she shut down. She told me that she would rather take an "F" than write an essay.
Wow.
I told her that I could let her avoid the assignment, as that will not do her any good. And I would not be doing my job if I let her slide. I told her that I am willing to work with her. We would work on this together, taking baby steps. I told her that for now, I just wanted her to write about her topic. I told her not to worry about structure or anything else. Just write.
She seemed OK with that idea. At the end of the in-class writing session, she said that she was now worried about introductions, and the like. I told her not to stress about that now. We are taking this slow and she should focus on the task at hand.
I have heard of math anxiety, test anxiety, pubic speaking anxiety, but never essay wring anxiety. But the sheer look of fear on this girl's face told me that she would rather be in the dentist chair than write an essay. This was no joke. She has writing anxiety.
After class, I told my office mate about what happened. She was as shocked as I was. She suggested having this student write in a journal a couple time a week and then review it with me, just to get used to writing. I think that is a great idea. I am going to pick up a notebook for her and present the idea to her on Monday. I am also going to continue to spoon feed her until she gains some confidence. I am afraid that if I don't, I will lose her. Perhaps some in-class free writing session would not only benefit her but others as well.
Have any of you heard of "writing anxiety"?
On Monday nights, I take the Boy to a doggie playgroup. For five bucks, he gets to run around and play with other dogs for an hour. I am required to stay with him, just in case he decides to do his business indoors.
I have really enjoyed our little play dates. I have met some nice people and some really nice dogs. Even GML has brought her boys to playgroup. The Boy does have a couple of dog friends that he plays with. He also has a few doggie girlfriends that he tries to mount, even though the plumbing isn't working. (Can't fault him for trying!) Lately, the playgroup has gotten a bit crowded because word of mouth has surfaced about the playgroup. Also, the head trainer who is also the owner, is absolute fantastic when it comes to dogs and their behavior. But, this has introduced new people who do not understand the rules of playgroup.
Often same sex dogs will mount each other as a sign of dominance over the other. The Boy does this a lot. He seems to think that he is the king of playgroup. There are some dogs that he knows not to try mounting because that dog will kick his ass. So, the Boy only goes after dogs that he thinks he can dominate. The dog on the opposite end of the Boy's attempt at dominance either submits or runs in fear. There are trainers at the playgroup who supervise the play to ensure that the dogs are safe and also break up any fights that may occur. Usually, the offender is placed in doggie time out until he or she can behave. And the Boy has done his share of time out.
I don't get too worried when the Boy goes after females. Many usually run off or one of the trainers removes him. And there have been a couple of dogs who have kicked the Boy's ass. But, the Boy can be very persistent when he has his sights set on another dog. No amount of time out will stop him from bothering another dog. I have spoken to the trainers about the Boy's "behavior". They tell me that he does not act like this when he is at daycare, in fact, he plays very nicely with the other dogs. Most likely, he is showing off for me, his mom. It does not excuse his behaviour; it only explains it.
So last night, we arrived at playgroup. And there were a few new faces. When we were told to "release the hounds", the Boy found what he though would be a potential playmate, a male Lab mix. This dog was new to playgroup, so he was a little shy. The Boy tried to initiate play with play bows, paw slaps, yips and the like, but this dog wanted nothing to do with the Boy. The Boy attempted to mount this dog, which was met with removal by one of the trainers. Of course, the Boy was not going to give up that easily. He kept trying to mount this dog. I even stepped in to remove him from the situation, without touching the other dog. I sensed that this dog's parents were none too pleased at the antics of my Boy. I apologized profusely, stating that the Boy is not vicious, but I would do everything that I could to keep him away from their dog.
At one point, one of the other dog owners said to me "I think that guy kicked the Boy." I was shocked. I didn't want to confront him without having actually seeing his foot hit my dog. About five minutes later, I saw what appeared to be this guy kneeing or kicking my dog. I still was not sure. Finally, I actually saw this guys foot leave the ground and kick my Boy. The Boy did not yip or anything; he is a very strong dog. But, I was furious.
Rule #1 of doggie playgroup: Do not discipline another person's dog.
(I would also submit Rule #1A: Do not hit a dog...EVER!)
How dare this jerk hit my dog! No one is allow to discipline my dog except me, Husband and the trainers. And to hit an animal is just wrong on so many levels. If this jackass hit my dog, who knows what he does to his own dog.
With my urge to kill rising, I went over to one of the trainers and told her what I saw. I guess my rage got the best of me because before she could say anything to the jackass, I got in his face and said "If I see you kick my dog again, I am going to kick your ass." You do not under any circumstances touch my dog. That's what the trainers are for." He looked at me and muttered something unintelligible, to which I replied "I can and will kick your ass." (Did I mention that the jackass was about 6'4" and I am about 5'4" on a good day?)
The trainer finally made it over to us and I guess she had a talk with the guy. He did not get kicked out though. It didn't really matter because it was almost the end of playgroup.
But I was fuming. Some of my fellow dog parents came over to lend support for me and the Boy. They did not blame me for getting pissed. I did feel bad about losing my temper. I should have allowed the trainer to handle it. I did apologize to her for my actions. And, I should have said something to one of the trainers when I was told about the first kick. But, I didn't want to accuse someone without actually seeing it firsthand. I definitely should have handled it better, but I don't regret standing up for my Boy.
I guess I know how parents feel about anyone trying to harm their kids. I know someone will comment that you can't compare the two, but my point is that when you care about someone as much as I do with the Boy, you will protect them.
How do you feel about group assignments? I am considering a group assignment in which the students must write a proposal to change something that they believe is in need of change on campus. They will brainstorm in groups, but I am wondering if I should have them do a group paper or have each student write his or her own paper.
Here's the thing. I have always hated group work where the entire group is graded as a group. I was always the one who was stuck doing all the work, while the lazy-asses would get the same credit.
But, the other side to doing this is that group work is something that the student will have to endure in the real world. And there have been times where I have worked on a group project, only to have a lazy-ass take the credit for doing nothing.
My though is that since this will be the first essay for this class, it would be a good idea to have the class work in groups on the brainstorming and research, but have each student writing their own paper. It would allow me to evaluate their work. Then, I can group them based on ability for a full group assignment.
Any thoughts on this???
Good has triumphed over evil as the NY Giants beat the NE Patriots.
How friggin' sweet is that????
Although my boys in Black and Gold did not make it to the big dance, I am happy that someone knocked the Pats off their high horse. Cheers to the Giants who played a solid game on both sides of the ball. Their "D" kicked the crap out of Brady. It was like they had Brady locked in their radar the entire game. Also cheers to Plaxico Burress for the game winning touchdown. Even though he no longer plays for the Boys in Black and Gold, he is a phenomenal player.
And what can you say about Eli??? Well done!!!!
Belichick was so upset that he walked off the field before the final knee. How childish and asinine is that?
Brady is whinning becuase he was playing with an injury. How long before people start blaming Giselle's presence at the game as a reason for the loss???
I guess paybacks are a bitch.
The halftime show was great. Love Petty and the Heartbreakers!!!
The commercials were OK I guess. I liked the Audi commercial that mimicked the horse head scene from the Godfather. I also liked the Progressive ad that mimicked the Geico ad with the squirrels. But, my favorite was the Budweiser ad with the dog training the horse all to the music of Rocky. That was just genius!
Oh and the best part of the entire day was Puppy Bowl IV. The pageantry! The puppies! The puddles!!!! Just too friggin' cute!!! The Boy had a great time watching the excitement.
Next up, March Maddness!!!!!
I am so glad this week is over. It has not been the greatest for me. Too much outside stuff has interfered with what I should be doing. Yesterday was the third in my axis of crappiness. I had a migraine that resulting in my going home early. I am trying to get organized and figure out what needs to be done, what can wait and what can go take a flying leap.
I am one of those people who lives for structure and organization. Problem is, that when something gets in the way, I have trouble adjusting my life. I become frustrated and I don't know how to balance everything. I often feel like I am spinning out of control. I overcompensate for that one thing that got in the way, which usually means that everything else gets put aside. The funny thing is that is usually something that is short lived. But for some reason, it seems like it's the biggest catastrophe in the history of my universe.
One of my goals for this year and for turning 40 is trying to just take a deep breath and let things ride. Shit does happen. I just have to decide if I want to deal with the shit.
One of my students handed me a note explaining why he was absent from class on Tuesday.
Please excuse John Doe from class on Tuesday. He is under a doctor's care for the flu
Signed,
John Doe's mother
I don't know what to say to that.
I woke up this morning only to find that the power was out. My watch said 7 AM. How am I supposed to get ready to teach an 8 AM class in the dark??? Plus, there is some serious weather related heinousness going on in Lake Effect Snow Central.
"That's just great." I thought to myself. "Oh how I wish.."
"No..it couldn't happen"
I have a battery operated radio that I keep in the home office. I turn on the local news-talk station and listen to the cancellation list.
I waited in sheer anticipation. "Oh please...just this once."
Then it happened.
Seeking Solace's College is closed!
YIPPIE!!!!!!!
Oh, and the power came back on at 9 AM. Bonus!!!!
Let me set this one up for you....
The scene: My office which I share with another instructor. The door is open and two students poke their heads in, looking a little lost.
Time: 9:25 AM
Me: Can I help you?
Student A: We are looking for Ms. Office-mate
Me: Well, I haven't seen her yet. However, she does have a class at 9:30 in Building A in room 123.
Student B: No, there was a sign on the door that said her class was cancelled.
Me: Well, I doubt that she would be here if her class was cancelled.
Blank stares from both students for about five seconds...
Student A: Oh yeah, I guess so. Thank you.
Sigh. Sadly, some people a just a dimly lit candle.
What's funny is that my office-mate and I were saying how great it would be if we had a couch in the office for naps!! But then again, one of us might sleep through class!
Ever had one of those days where you complete many tasks, yet you feel like you have accomplished little? That's how I feel today. Like, I almost had a productive day, but not quite.
I am feeling better. Thanks for all the well wishes. This flare was rough, but not as bad as it could have been. Tomorrow, I will get back to working out, albeit slowly.
One nice thing is that the sun is shinning in Lake Effect Snow Central and it is above 30 degrees. YAY!!!! Tomorrow it is supposed to be in the 40's. Woohoo...heat wave.
What's ruff? It's The Boy here. While my mom is recovering, I thought I would do the meme that Wayfarer Scientista's Disreputable Dog did.
Rules: Link to your tagger's owner and post these rules on your blog. Share 5 facts about yourself on your blog, some random, some weird.
Here are 5 random facts from about The Boy:
1. My mom and dad adopted me when I was 1 1/2 years old from a rescue group. My puppy-hood was very sad. My previous family was not very nice to me. Their children would pull on my ears and tail. The family gave me away when I was a year old because I was no longer a cute puppy.
2. The Boy is my blog pseudonym. My dad named me after a brand of cigar becuase I was black and tan and shaped like one. My name is a shortened form of that brand of cigar. I have a middle name too. It's the childhood nickname of Hank Williams Jr.
3. I love almost any kind of fruit or veggie, especially bananas. Actually, I love to eat. I am very food driven. If there is food, I will eat it. Mom thinks I would eat until my stomach exploded and then go back for more.
4. I am quite the ladies man. I love the ladies. I am currently pursuing a German Shepard named Libby. I have other girlfriends too, like Nestlie, who lives next door and is a chocolate Lab. She is my "main bitch". There's also Mandy, the German Shepard, Baylor, another German Shepard, Emma, the Pit Bull mix, Carmen, a Swiss Mountain dog and Gretel, the Weimaraner. Mom is relieved that I am fixed because she does not want to pay puppy support.
5. I love the snow. I love to roll in it and dig in it. Mom can't get me in the house when it is snowing. She calls me the Snow Dog.
I tag Rented Life's kitties and any other pups, hounds or kitties that want to play!
A moderate RA flare has sidelined me. I had a feeling it was coming on Thursday when I told Righteous Babe that I was feeling some pain. But, I thought I was sore from my workout the night before becuase it felt like muscular pain instead of joint pain. I guess I just had a reaction to the insanely cold weather in Lake Effect Snow Central.
I woke up yesterday unable to walk to do much of anything. Husband stayed home with me. The Boy tried to snuggle on the couch without causing me any pain. At least I got some reading done and watched some Law and Order reruns.
Today, I feel a little better. The swelling has gone down and I am more mobile. Some things take a little longer to do...like typing.
I hope this passes quickly so that I can get back to life.
I have met with all of my classes. I can't say how things will go just yet. I don't teach the first day, mostly because I end up repeating everything again because someone added the course or forgot to show up for class. I do have a few "repeat offenders"; in fact, one of my courses has about 70% repeat offenders. A couple of them failed my class last semester. Have they learned the error of their ways?? I don't know, but my past experience tells me that only a small number atone for their past sins.
I am not quite used to the 8 AM/five days a week schedule. I am not normally a morning person. Even the Boy is not used to the new routine. He is still snuggled in his bed as I fumble around, trying to get ready. When he sees that I am ready to go downstairs for breakfast, he gets up, does a big doggie stretch as if to say "OK, I am ready to face the world." I wish that would work for me. I need at least one cup of coffee before I can function at minimum capacity.
This morning, I hope to tackle my issues with Blackboard. It has not been very kind to me.

Today has not gone the way I had planned. I wanted to get up early in order to have a trial run at my obscenely early schedule. I wanted to get up at 6:30 and be out of the house by 7:15.
I got up at 7:oo and left the house at 8:00.
I was out in the cold today because I wanted to get my stuff copies and ready to go. I figured it would be quiet at work, seeing that it was a holiday.
Husband and I were about halfway to my job when a strange odor was coming from the engine of our vehicle.
Burning oil...great. That's what we get for leaving the car out overnight. So, we drove home to switch vehicles.
So on the road again. No troubles until I got to the office.
The office, which I share with the lovely Righteous Babe, was trashed. By trashed I mean the maintenance crew didn't bother to return the office to it's rightful appearance after cleaning. There was junk piled on our desks. One of our desk chairs was missing. And, we had no chairs for students. So, I went on a hunt for another desk chair and two chairs for students. I found them in the classroom across the hall.
OK, after I got my side of the office back in order, I decided to work on what I intended to do. Print out stuff and make copies.
No such luck. My printer cartrige is dead.
CRAP!!!!
Alright, I'll just import some stuff to Blackboard.
Nope, For some reason, my zip files won't upload.
GRRRR!!!!
It's 11 AM and I am ready to just call it a day.
There's a radio station in Lake Effect Snow Central that is running a contest in which one can win a "Man Cave". The "Man Cave" consists of
- Big screen TV and home entertainment center
- Slate pool table
- Bar and bar stools
- Full stock beer fridge
- Table and chairs
- Power tools
- Guitar Hero
- Food and beverages for a year
- Cigars for a year
OK, I could dig that.
I am working on a "Man Cave" for Husband. It's not really a "Man Cave" per se. It's just a place where he can play his guitars would annoying me too much. We are transferring the room that is currently the home office into his space. The former guest room will become the office.
But then I got to thinking. What about a "woman cave"? I mean, wouldn't it be nice to have a place where we ladies can get away from spouses, pets, kids and the world in general?I could so get into that.
So, what would go in my "woman cave"? Well...
- A big soaking tub (Yeah, GML, like yours!)
- A comfy couch and chair
- Fireplace
- Home entertainment center with my favorite music and DVDs.
- Books
- Candles
- A fully stocked bar with wine and assorted spirits.
- My favorite foods
- And, it would have to be sound proof. I don't want to hear anyone trying to find me!
Doesn't that sound great?
What would be in your "woman cave"???
I sent the Boy to doggie day care for the day. That should allow me to get some work done.
My syllabi are almost finished. I had to sent an email to the chair of the English department to clarify a couple of thing. I should get cracking on my tracking calendar and the first couple of lectures.
I am trying something new in my Critical Thinking class. I going to use a descending grading system. Everyone will start off with the maximum number of points in the course. Then, the student will have to maintain his or her "A". Their grade will descend, based on their scores on assignments. This semester, I will be using Web-CT to post their grades, so they can track their progress. (Thanks Weezy for the tip with Web-CT!)
I had a professor in law school who did this. She started the course by saying "All of you are starting with an "A". It is up to you to keep it." It made all of us very conscious of our work, becuase we wanted to maintain that "A". In the end, I did get the "A"and I worked very hard to maintain it during the semester.
Now of course, I will have to include very specific language in my syllabus stating that not everyone will end up with an "A" and that the student's grade will descend based on their scores from assignments. I am sure that those who are conscientious will maintain their "A", but I wonder about those who are not so conscientious. Will that student maintain success if it is given to them up front? Will there be more complaining? Will a student take responsibility if he or she sees that it is up to them to keep a grade?
What do you think? Have any of you used this kind of system?
My student responded to my email by saying that it wasn't her fault that she had a family emergency and had to email her paper. Then she "thanked" me for my time.
So, this is my fault?
I did not recieve an email from this student indicating that she had a family emergency and asked if she could email her paper. If I had received such an email, I would have allowed her to submit the paper, just to avoid this exact situation. And, I would have kept the email in my files, just in case there were any issues.
The whole situation sounds made up to me. Every time I responded to one of her allegations, she would come back with another excuse. I am sure I could write back and say "Well, if I had received an email from you regarding your situation, I would have allowed you to submit the paper." But, I just don't want to hear the plethora of excuses, such as "Well, I tried to email it, but my computer was down and you wouldn't give me an extension."
I am going to dignify her latest message with a response. She is backed into a corner now. If she goes to the Dean, she will have to produce proof that she attempted to contact me. She doesn't have it and she knows it. Her "thanking" me may be one last futile attempt at a slap/guilt trip.
In my mind, the matter is settled.
I have this student from my Critical Thinking class who is insisting that she should have received a "D" instead of an "F". I sent her an email, explaining that she did not submit two essays, one of them being the final. Well, I just received an email in which she "claims" that she submitted it.
Sorry hon, but that dog won't hunt.
I made it a requirement that all students hand deliver the final to me at my office on the due date. I checked off every student that submitted a paper on my roll sheet. I did not accept any email submissions. I also stopped accepting papers at noon on the due date. I had a sign on my office door in 16 point bold font stating that no papers would be accepted after noon on the due date.
I swear, I think I am going to institute a policy in which the student signs in their paper. In other words, each time a student submits something, they have to sign a sheet stating they submitted the assignment. Plus, I think I am no long going to accept email submission. I require read receipts, but there is always the "My computer crashed." or My printer doesn't work."
This is just crazy. And I am tired of the bullshit.
I think I am going to notify the Dean on this one. I have a feeling that this student will not go away quietly.
Now my desktop computer in my home office is AFU!
Granted, it is five years old, but jeez... It gives me these messages that a network connection is unplugged, despite the fact that it IS plugged in. It tells me that it does not recognize my online provider while I am on the Internet. It gives me very bizarre error messages that even Husband can't comprehend.
But the worst is that my software that I use for my grades is damaged and some of my grades from last are missing. And since the software is corrupted, my backup files are AFU. I was able to restore some of my grades. The rest I will have to re-input because I still have the document with the grade. Anything else, I will have to figure out mathematically. At least I use points and not percenteages.
But still, DAMN!!!!!!!!
Then, I spent the morning transferring any remaining important files to my flash drive and laptop. We have a second desktop in our home office, so I can put some of the home stuff on that one with the backups on a flash drive or CD.
I really believe there is some vast conspiracy in which computers and other technology just keel over and die after a set time period, thus forcing us to buy new stuff! And usually it occurs when it is cheaper to buy a new item than to have the old one fixed. (And no, I do not believe in extended warranties, which may be part of the conspiracy.
Wait, it gets worse...
I get a call from my RA doctor's office who complained that they did not receive a report from my eye doctor. One of my meds can cause eye damage, so I must have my eyes checked twice a year. After some phone calls, it turns out the my eye doctor's office was sending the reports to my PCP and not my RA doc.
Crap. Because of all this, I was not able to do what I really wanted to do this morning. Classes start a week from tomorrow and I really need to get some work done. That student who wants to miss the five class sessions was told by the Dean that she should choose another section of suffer the consequences of missing five classes with me. Well, I only allow three absences, after that, I need a doctor's note or something from the jail or bail bondsman (You think I am kidding?). Otherwise, it's a 10 point deduction per absence. So, this girl will be 20 points in the hole before I even see her. Plus, I just can't wait to see if she will turn in her work on time. Not on time means no credit.
Sigh.
Do you think this is a case of the Mondays?
He has been driving me crazy with this purchase. He has gone back and forth with whether he wanted this guitar that he has been dreaming about or some other guitar he saw a couple of weeks ago which was totally different. I kept telling him to just buy the f-ing guitar that he has wanted. Even Rented Life's husband, who has been a consultant on this purchase, told to just buy the damn thing already.
Finally, he listened.
Oh, and what did I get? Ear plugs and a bottle of Excedrin! (Just kidding, hon!) Husband has promised to use headphones when I am around.
Any requests??? Yes, he can play a little of Stairway to Heaven!
Last night, Husband and I watched a documentary on Animal Planet called The Wolf Within. It discussed how dogs have evolved from their wolf ancestors and showed the similarities between the wolf pack and the "family pack". Of course, the Boy was mesmerized by the show. Actually, anytime there is a dog on the TV, he sits in front of the TV and watches the screen, cocking his head from side to side.
At one point in the show, there were scenes of the wolf pack, howling to each other. This was to show communication among the pack members. The same can be said of dogs, when they whine or yip at us.
Suddenly, and without any prompting from us, the Boy stood up and threw his head back...
AWOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Husband and I were stunned. We had never seen the Boy do that!
I guess he just proved the point. In every dog, there is a wolf within.
That's me. I am 40 today.
Last night while trying to fall asleep, I was trying to figure out what 40 is supposed to feel like. Am I supposed to feel different? Wiser? Should I feel excited? Anxious?
Then, I thought about my 20's. My 20's were a blur. I spent 8 years consumed with getting my BS, MA, JD and trying to pass the bar exam. I wrestled with my personal demons. The biggest highlight was marrying Husband in 1992. I guess my 20's was the "getting started" phase.
Then, I thought about my 30's. I worked for a small law firm, a big law firm and then for myself. I wanted to carve my niche in the legal community, so I worked long hours. Toward the end of my 30's, I wrestled with whether I should remain in the legal profession or move toward academia. I wrestled with the "Do I want to have kids" thing. Probably the biggest highlight of my 30's was being diagnosed with RA. Basically, my thirties was all about trying to find my place in the world.
Then I thought, I have accomplished a great deal in that time. I earned three degrees, passed my state's bar exam (which is one of the hardest bar exams in the US). I was a practicing attorney. I ran my own business. I married the greatest guy in the world and we are still deeply in love. I found my professional calling by combining the two things I love, the law and teaching. I have wonderful friends. And even though, I still wrestle with my personal demons and the RA, it's not as bad as it used to be. I have come to terms with many aspects of my life. I am in a good place.
So I guess for me, 40 feels like it is now my time. My time enjoy the fruits of my labor. Time to be OK with where my life has taken me. Time to release and let go of any remaining demons. Time change the theme of my life. Time to have fun and enjoy. No worries and no regrets.
So my theme for my 40's is "I will sing a new song."
I thought I would pick out a new template.
What do you think?
I just received an email from a student who informed me that she is starting a training program for a new job. Unfortunately, she will miss the first five sessions for one of my writing class. She wants to know if she can have all the assignments so that she does not fall behind.
Um, I just don't know if I can do that. I mean, if she was missing one or two classes, maybe. But FIVE???? She says that if she knew that the training would take up that much time, she would not have signed up for my section. But still, FIVE classes???
Did I mention that the class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays for an hour and a half? That's huge!
Sigh. Here we go again.
I was able to get some sleep last night, despite the wicked wind storm shaking my house. I was worried that the tree in front was going to fall on my house. Husband and I have bitched about the town removing it, but since it is not "dead", they won't do anything. I guess I will have to wait until it crashes into my house or my neighbor's car.
I worked on my CT syllabus today. Just fixing it a little. I spent most of my time reworking the calendar. There is this book that students are required to read and I absolutely hate it. So do the students. I trying to fit it in the schedule and make it as painless as possible. I really want to get working on my two writting courses.
My birthday is Friday. I scheduled a spa day for myself as a gift to myself. I am getting a massage, facial, manicure, and pedi!!! Sweet!!!! Husband bought me a new Ipod for my birthday. I haven't taken the old one to the Apple geeks, but I will at some point. I just hate going all the way to Big Ass Mall. But if they can fix it, I will give it to Husband.
Speaking of Big Ass Mall, I learned that the Body Shop at the mall near my house is closing, which means the only Body Shop in Lake Effect Snow Central is at Big Ass Mall. That's just great. I guess I will be ordering my favorite stuff. I should go to my old one before January 21st to stock up on goodies.
Husband and I decided to finally get with the program and signed up for DVR. Yes, we were still using VCR tapes (I have a VCR/DVD player.) It will be nice since I have to go to bed earlier and all my favorite shows are on late.
Well, time to make some dinner. Then, Husband and I are off to the Y for our swim.
I am having trouble sleeping..again.
I was pretty sore on Monday. Working out plus all the cleaning I did resulted in some pain. I felt some pain in my joints too which made me wonder if an RA flare was going to rear it's ugly head. I guess the lesson is that I can't work out and do any major housework on the same day. Sleeping can be difficult when the joints ache. Pain meds help, but sometimes I feel a little drowsy. I do take a multi vitamin, plus, B complex, vitamin D and fish oil.
Husband's snoring has increased. It's kinda frustrating because we are sure that he does not have sleep apnea. (He did a sleep study over the summer.) Husband tried the Breathe Right strips, but they just don't work. He did try the throat spray which did help a little. I usually end up kicking him out and sending him to the guest room. He is really sweet about it. He feels bad, actually, that he keeps me awake.
My guess is that my sleep is screwed up becuase my life schedule is screwed up. When I am on a regular schedule, I usually get a decent amount of sleep, even with the snoring. The holidays and now the continued winter break have changed all of that. Even though the Boy herds me out of bed every morning no later than 8:30 AM, I am still tired. Even after a nap, which only lasts about an hour, I don't feel rested.
So I guess I have to start back on my schedule, like I was back to work, even though I have another week and a half of break. It's just as well. Since I am a new adjunct, I got the short straw on courses. I have ALL 8 AM courses this semester. Five days a week. Also, I need to get my courses ready to go. It looks like I will be teaching the third class this term. That means I have two courses that I have never taught before and one that I have taught. Three separate preps. On top of that, I have some ideas for articles, so I want to have as much done with coursework so I can work on that project. It will not go well if I am exhausted.
So tonight I will take my shower before bed, set the timer to record SVU (At least House is a repeat, so I won't get sucked in) and wind down so that I can go to bed at 10 PM.
- I am so sore today. Not from my workouts, but from taking down the Christmas tree and all the vacuuming that goes with cleaning up after having a real tree. I was crawling around my living room with the hose attachment, trying to get all the needles out of every nook and cranny.
- Now that the holidays are officially over, I can get back into a routine. Holidays really mess that up.
- Even the Boy will be back to his normal routine. That means doggie playgroup tonight. He has not seen his friends for two weeks.
- I will start preparing for next semester this week. One of my classes was cancelled, so I only have two. I am teaching Critical Thinking again, which will not take too much work. But, there are some changes I do want to make.
- I am also teaching a writing course this semester. This is uncharted territory for me. I am excited because this will give me a chance to s me to expand my teaching skills. The chair of the English department is so nice and very helpful. Some of the other professors have emailed me with their support. Of course, I will be bugging my bloggy friends for help...that is if you don't mind schooling me!
- I am having lunch with Awesome Former Colleague today. Olive Garden!!!!!
- On the transferring to vegetarian front, I am doing very well. No beef or pork. I am still eating chicken, but not so much, maybe once a week. Seafood is a bit of a challenge. Husband made dinner last night. He surprised me with spaghetti with Boca ground "meat". Yummy!!!!
- My rheumatologist is completely on board with my change and gave me some helpful suggestions on making sure I getting enough protein and iron. She mentioned that there are studies which indicate that a vegetarian diet can help with RA. I am so glad she is on board. Many docs still think that you have to eat meat to be healthy.
OK, I need to get some things done this morning....
ETA: I just checked the status of my courses and holy crap....the course I thought was going to be cancelled has three students registered!!! Maybe there is hope!!!!
My boys in Black and Gold are done for the season.
Now, I don't care who wins the Super Bowl, so long as they beat the Patriots. I hate them so much that I would even root for Dallas.
Instead of sitting on our butts in front of the TV last night, Husband and I decided to go to the Y to work out. We figured Friday night would be less crowded in the gym. And it was. There were only five people there.
I finished my workout a few minutes before Husband. We were the only people left in the fitness area. As I was walking around and stretching, I walked by the elliptical machines. All of the sudden, one of the ellipticals started making loud cranking noises.
There was NO ONE on the machine. In fact, no one had been on the machine for about 15 minutes.
I started backing away slowly. Husband was cracking up on the treadmill saying in a very deep, evil, sadistic voice "GET OUT!!!"
I started laughing.
But, I think the damn thing was possessed.
Cross posted on the Active Academic
I got the blank screen of death on my Ipod Nano. My understanding is that it is probably dead.
Sniff.
It really blows because it's not even two years old. And since I just don't believe in any kind of "extended warranty", I will have to shop for a new one.
Damn technology!
What made it worse was I had to dig around for a CD to listen to while working out. I forgot how clumsy portable CD players are!!!!
The Active Academic Challenge has begun. Check it out!!!
I know it may be a little cliché to quote U2 today, but I just couldn't resist.
This time last year, I was unemployed, depressed and unsure where my life was heading. I had to battle some personal and professional demons and face some things about myself that needed to be addressed. I had to really look at who I am and what really matters to me. There were many triumphs, restarts and lessons learned. 2007 ended with new joys, a new job, some great new friends and just a new outlook on where my life is going. The big lesson learned is that I will be OK no matter what comes my way. I have a great Husband and dog who love me no matter what. And, I have great friends who support me and stand by me whenever I need them.
I don't like resolutions. but like Philosophy Factory said, it more like making positive patterns to improve on. I would like to continue some of the positive changes that came out of my stressful year, plus some other changes for the better.
- In my quest to return to being a vegetarian, I am giving up all beef products. Husband, who is a big beef eater, is 100% supportive in my change and even purchased some meatless products for me.
- Fitness will be back on my radar. More about that later.
- Less obsessing and stressing over the things that I cannot control, especially my job and my students.
- Spending more time on myself.
- Enjoying the ride..I am turning 40 in a few days...it's about time I did.

Watching the Wheels by John Lennon
Who sends tenderloin and ground beef as a Christmas gift?
Husband and I received this gift from a family member. It came in the mail in a Styrofoam cooler.
I guess I should have mentioned to the family that I am in the process of becoming a vegetarian again and will be off beef products beginning January 1. (I gave up pork products this year.)
Oh well, Husband and the Boy will have A LOT of steak and burgers to eat!
While the Boy will do sit and down on command, he was not happy when the photographer's assistant kept moving him around. Some of the proofs have him looking either scared, frustrated or dopey! Many of the pics had his tongue hanging out. But this pic has him looking like a regal German Shepard.
He is a real good looking Boy!
I ended up going shopping by myself yesterday. J spent the morning at the doctor, only to learn that she has strep. (What is up with strep 'round here?) Anyway, it was a decent hunt, but I have a question?
Where are all the deep discounts that the news keeps talking about?
I got the 20% coupon (Shout to Comebacknikki...read coo-pin. I am embracing my redneck roots!) in the mail from BBW. I thought "Wow, I am really going to stock up. I always stock up during their after Christmas sale." Well, I think I spent $20.00! Sad, I know. But, there really wasn't the deals that they usually have. Usually, there are tubs all over the store with all kinds of goodies. OK, the $3.00 body cream was a good deal, but there wasn't too many other deals like that. Even the $5.00 Wallflowers was deceiving because only certain wallflowers were covered and disappointed people were tossing the non-sale wallflowers into the bin, making it rather confusing.
It was the same everywhere. The Loft advertised an additional 30% sale merch, which was great. But, that did not include the majority of sweaters. I did buy this, this but in a light blue and this shirt, which was the only item that I got the 30%. And yes, I checked the sale rack, but there was not much there that was not there before Christmas. I did find this sweater at Banana Republic. That led to another question?
Why is there an abundance of XS items? Why is it that the M and L girls of the world have dig and dig through the pile only to be disappointed? I mean, are there that many people who are that size? Or is it just another way for us to feel like crap?
Finally, I picked up a fleece zip jacket at JCP for $8.00 and these cute cords which will look great with the BR sweater. That made me happy.
After a long day, I went home and had leftover Thai from lunch. (Husband took me out to lunch yesterday). A long bath with my new Lush products was in order.
But I have one last question.
Can you have sore muscles from shopping?
I'm serious. My quads are killing me!!!!
Christmas was a very relaxing time for the Boy, Husband and me. We spent Christmas Eve at GML's house enjoying wonderful food and laughter.(Quote of the night..."Did you grow up living under power lines?") GML's boys had a great time visiting with us after they were released from exile. Poor Blue. He barked and barked not just becuase there were people that he could not visit, but there was food that should be eaten...by him!
Christmas Day was filled with just chilling out at home. We watched DVDs, napped and played with the Boy. We froze the remaining half of our turkey from Thanksgiving, so we dinned on that along with yummy sides. Very yummo!
Husband did a great job on my presents. Books, DVDs, cashmere, Lush products were just some of the items that were for me. The Boy loved his treats and his stuffed rabbit and pheasant. He knew which package contained his gifts. I often wonder how dogs know which gifts are theirs!
Also, thanks again to all my bloggy gift givers. You gals are the best!!!!
Yesterday, Husband went back to work and I avoided the Boxing Day heinousness. Partially because of the crowds, but mostly because I have a cold. I stayed curled up under a blanket reading. Today, I am much better, thanks to Zicam. J and I are going shopping so that we can put a dent in our area's economy. I have some gift cards and coupons that are just screaming to be used. I don't care what the etiquette people say. Gift cards RULE!!!!!
Husband and I are spending Christmas in Lake Effect Snow Central, since Husband used up all of his vacation time on his plague. I am relieved that we are not traveling to Redneck Hometown this year. It's always a hassle. The weather is always a factor. I mean yesterday was crazy. It started off at 51 degrees with rain and wind gusts up to 50 MPH. Then, it switched over to snow and the temperature is about 16 degrees now with blowing winds and more snow on the way. With all that heinousness, it's just better that we stay put. Also, I am not in the mood to deal with the family drama that surrounds most visits. By the end of the visit, I end up returning home stressed out and resentful.
We will be spending Christmas Eve with GML, her husband and the pups. That will be fun. Let the alcohol flow! Christmas Day will be spent at home, relaxing and enjoying the day...just me, Husband and the Boy. No stress, no resentment. Just spending time with the two most important beings in my life is the best gift I could ask for.
So from The Boy, Husband and me, have a Merry Christmas or Happy Whatever It Is You Celebrate. Cheers to all!!!!
As seen at Comebacknikki's:
1. Eggnog or Hot Chocolate?
Hot Chocolate with a little Baileys!
2. Does Santa wrap presents or just put them under the tree?
Wrapped.
3. Colored lights on tree/house or white?
Colored.
4. Do you hang mistletoe?
No, I am afraid the Boy would try to eat it!
5. When do you put your decorations up?
It depends. Usually around the first week of December, but this year it was this past Wednesday for the decorations. We are decorating the tree tonight.
6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)?
Mashed or smashed potatoes and stuffing.
7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child:
My parents always tell the story of how when I was three and my brother was two, we woke up early Christmas morning. But instead of playing with all the toys that our parents spent most of the night assembling, we were interested in the glass ornaments on the tree. My brother climbed on top of the table and starting dropping them as I yelled "Do it again!"
8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?
What truth? Is there something I should know????
9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?
NEVER! There would be nothing to look forward to on Christmas Day!
10. How do you decorate your Christmas tree?
Lights, ornaments etc. I do collect the Hallmark Spotlight on Snoopy series, so every year I get a new Snoopy. This year it's Snoopy as an astronaut.
11. Snow! Love it or Dread it?
I live in Lake Effect Snow Central...what do you think????
12. Can you ice skate?
Yes, I used to take lessons for many years. I could do some of the fancy stuff like jumps and spins. I stopped once I started college. Now, I would probably end up in the ER with a broken bone or something.
13. Do you remember your favorite gift?
The promise ring Husband gave at our first Christmas when we were dating.
14. What's the most important thing about the Holidays for you?
Spending time with those whom you care for the most.
15. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert?
Any and all. Bring it on!!
16. What is your favorite holiday tradition?
Husband and I love going out and cutting our own tree. We take the Boy and go for a long hike through one of the local farms in Lake Effect Snow Central and look for the perfect tree.
17. What tops your tree?
A star with lights.
18. What are your favorite Christmas songs?
I just made a Christmas CD, which I will share with you later. But, I love Happy Xmas by John Lennon and Sarah McLachlan's Wintersong CD. I also love Silent Night sung by the Temptations. I bought my dad that record when I was little. It was his favorite. Husband loves Father Christmas by the Kinks.
19. Real tree or artificial?
Real. We grew up in a town where Christmas tree growing is huge and we are both well schooled in picking out trees. Don't worry though. After the holiday, Husband cuts the tree and we place it in the wooded lot behind our house so that the rabbits and other critters have shelter for the harsh winters and so that it can be absorbed back into the soil.
20. Candy Canes! Yuck or yum?
Yumo!!!!! Even the Boy gets a rawhide version of a candy cane!
Chaser, one of my favorite bloggers and fellow fashionista, has started a new blog called The Fashionable Academic. In this blog are tips and suggestions for looking fab. Anyone who reads Chaser's blog knows she has a eye for great clothes and shoes!!! Check it out!
There is this one blogger who keeps posting snarky comments on their blog regarding Chaser's new blog. What the hell is wrong with people? If you don't agree with her choices, that's fine. You don't have to be an ass about it.
Like my daddy used to say "If you don't have anything nice to say, shut the hell up."
GML and I got together this morning for coffee and to exchange Christmas gifts. We had a good laugh becuase we bought the same gift for each other.
What was really funny is that GML had already read it and thought I would love it. I read the review for it and thought she would love it.
How funny is that????
On Monday, I had an appointment with my doctor about my migraines. We concluded that they a most likely hormonal, and she suggested adding a magnesium supplement to my diet. But, what really concerned her was that my blood pressure was 132/84. Normal for me is 105-107/70-72.
Eep.
She thinks that it may be because of the recent increase in the dosage of one of my meds. I guess that is one of the side effects. She told me she wanted me to come in once a week for the next six weeks for a blood pressure check to monitor the problem.
Yesterday, I was not feeling right. I was jittery, nervous and I could feel might heart beating. I have a mitral valve prolapse (sticky heart valve) and a history of panic attacks. Well, it did not feel like a panic attack. Besides, I had nothing to feel panicky about. So, I called the office to see if I could come in for a BP check.
Let me tell you. I "heart" my doctor and her staff. They are so nice and accommodating. They got me in within two hours. The nurse was fully aware of my doctor's instructions.
The result...BP 105/70.
OK, that's a relief. They are chalking it up to just a blip. But, I am supposed to continue the BP checks.
I am still a little concerned though. My father's side of the family has a history of hear, high blood pressure and all that related stuff. To make matters worse, my dad had his first heart attack at 39.
I will be 40 next month.
Now, I know I am in much better health than my dad was at my age. Unlike my dad, I do not smoke. Never have. He smoked 3 packs a day. Plus, he his job was WAY more stressful than mine. One of the reasons I walked away from being a lawyer was because of the stress. Also, I am physically active, which is was not.
But, I am still concerned.
I know I should not worry about this; it's just going to make me more stressed. But hearing "Don't worry about it" actually makes me worry. So, I have to find ways to put it out of my mind.
Yesterday, Rented Life and I got together to exchange bloggy gifts. We had a wonderful time drinking coffee at this little mom and pop diner. We were laughing, cutting up and just having fun with our gifts when suddenly a woman walks up to our table.
BAM, BAM BAM, was the sound she made as her hand slapped our table and she yelled something unintelligible at us. Then, she went back to her booth located just a few spots behind us.
WTF???
My guess is that we were a tad bit loud. OK, maybe so. But, what the hell? Seems to me that the classy thing to do is to walk up to our table and say "Excuse me, but would you mind toning it down a little?"
I have to admit, her behavior made us laugh more than anything else. Sure, we did tone it down, but I think the woman looked more ridiculous than anything else.
Anyway, I love my bloggy gift. It is very appropriate for me. In fact, I am going to hang it up in my office. Of course, I will have to check with office mate to make sure she is cool with it.
Oh, and to my other bloggy gift exchangers, I plan on mailing your packages either today or tomorrow.

Why did I get a C- in your class? I just don't understand.

Although, your exam grades were very good, your research paper was a D at best. I warned you during our conference that your paper had suspect sources and while I could not technically prove plagiarism, you were riding on the ragged edge of disaster.

Good grief people, can't a girl get a break????
So much for the end of the world snow predictions. As of this morning, there is only 10 inches of snow. Now, for some of you, that may seem like a big deal. But, for those of us who living in Lake Effect Snow Central, it's nothing. When you get seven feet in four days like what happened here a few years ago, then you should start wondering if the end of the world is near.
Today's agenda now that grades are in and I am officially on vacation is to clean the house. Right now, my house looks like grading hell mixed with an infirmary. I also want to put up the indoor Christmas decorations too. Hopefully this weekend, Husband and I will go out and get our Christmas tree. We are traditionalists, and must have a real tree.
Speaking of Husband, he wants to thank everyone for their get well wishes. The antibiotics have kicked so he is going back to work today.
And the Boy? Well, let's just say he is having a blast in the snow. I will try to get some pics.
Grades are done and submitted!!!!!
WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!
Now, it's time to relax with a warm bath and some Bailey's!!!!!!!
Today was particularly rough. Husband's symptoms worsened, so we headed to the doctor. The official diagnosis is a sinus infection with strep. The wait at the doctor's office was quite excruciating, mainly because the office was blasting the TV and there was this one guy who felt the need to complain to everyone about his surgery. All I could think of was "Dude, spare me the details."
While Husband went to the pharmacy to get his prescription filled, I figured I would get the grocery shopping done. We were out of almost everything in the house. And, the weather is supposed to get pretty heinous this weekend. Well, you would think that people in my neck of the woods never dealt with a major snowstorm becuase the grocery store was insane! Yes, I realize that we may get up to 18 inches of snow, but for crying out loud, we deal with this ALL THE TIME!!! There is no need to buy enough bread and milk to feed a small country! Seriously, one would think that this is the dawn of the apocalypse and the four horseman are on their way. I decided to postpone my Target trip until tomorrow. I will go around 8 AM and get what I need and get out of there before all the insanity starts again.
Grading??? Well, I got through about half of the research papers for my quiet CT class. They are a bit on the weak side, mostly due to lack of proofreading and this blatant disregard for putting in text citations in the body of their papers. Honestly, I just don't feel like reading anymore tonight. But, I will most likely drag myself over to the dinning room table, put on my Ipod, and plow through them.
I think there are some Smirnoff's in the refrigerator.
Random Bullets from Grading Jail, the Infirmary and Winter Wonderland
- Two classes down and one to go. I have research papers and final essays from my quiet CT class left to grade. Saving the worst for last, I guess.
- My other CT class did an awesome job on their final essay. I think it was the manner in which I presented the topic that really helped them. They not only got the concept, but they ran with it. I hope my quiet class has the same result.
- I do have a couple of students who are on the boarder between two grades. I hate when this happens. Do I push them over or leave it be? I guess I will have to look at all the subjective elements of the course. Did they show up regularly? Did they participate? Was there an upward progression in their work? Did they put forth a consistent effort? Will this come back to bite me in the ass later?
- Husband is STILL sick. We now think that it is a sinus infection and pink eye. The eye stuff is starting to work. No more cloudiness or goop coming out of his eyes, but they are really bloodshot. As for the sinuses, he is in a lot of pain. I am using everything in my arsenal to combat his symptoms.
- I need to go to Target to pick up items for the Giving Tree for Husband's work. I have always enjoyed participating. This year, we drew a little girl and her mom. The little girl wants a Barbie and the mom only wants socks, a hat, gloves and a scarf. I am going to throw in a gift card to help them out.
- We got five inches of snow yesterday. That's considered a dusting in my neck of the woods. We are supposed to get between 18 and 24 inches of snow this weekend. Not totally unheard of here, but a pain nonetheless.
- Since Husband is sick, I get the job of shoveling. Thankfully, it's the fluffy stuff and not the heavy stuff. And no, we do not own a snow blower. Husband is just too "manly" for such things.
- The Boy shoveled his own path in the backyard. He just uses his head. I have to snap a photo of that.
- OK, time to get moving. Either I shop first, then grade or grade first, then shop.
I am plowing through my CT research papers. They are not as bad as my Law class. Some are still having trouble with citing within their paper, but unlike my law class, my CT freshman at least make an attempt to do it correctly.
Astroprof has a great post about his trials and tribulations on the grading front. Reading his post reminded me of one of my students back at Former College who cut and pasted information from a website in her research paper without citing the source. I knew it was plagiarism when I read "Click here for more information".
On the medical front, I am not sick. I guess I was having sympathy symptoms. But poor Husband has pink eye in addition to his cold. He was home again today. I took a break to get his prescription and some other supplies. Poor guy! He is such a trooper through all of this.
The Boy is going to daycare tomorrow. He has got a bad case of what I like to cal the "ya-yas", which means he has cabin fever. Today's walk was cut short because a little dog was trash barking at him and he tried to charge it, almost causing me to fall. I told him that he better behave because Santa Paws is watching to see if he is a good dog.
OK, I am going in for one more round.
Law class is finished. Now it's on to my two CT classes.
Message to the student who wrote in his research paper that the case he selected was too hard and he didn't find any additional information because of the limited time he had to do the assignment...
You had 2 1/2 months to work on this project. That is plenty of time to complete it, given that I am only asking for a five to seven page paper. Moreover, the fact that you found the assignment hard or had trouble finding research is not my fault. I stated numerous times in class that you should see me or email me with any questions or problems. You did not do either. Finally, you have some nerve writing in your paper that you thought the assignment was hard and unfair without even making any real attempt to write a coherent paper. You just cut and pasted sources together without even documenting your sources in the body of the paper. You just slapped a Works Cited page at the end with questionable sources. So when you get your "F", don't even think about crying to me about it because it will take every once of strength for mot to tear you a new one. You only have yourself to blame.
Would someone please tell me where they get this arrogance???
- I am tired.
- I have a headache from all the reading.
- My throat is starting to hurt. (Please don't let it be Husband's cold)
I have six more research papers to read for my law class. These are in the pile I call "Problem Papers". You know the ones. You start to read a 'Problem Paper" and you have to stop because it does not make sense, is full of errors and typos or has possible plagiarism. I usually set "Problem Papers" aside so that I can muster the strength to tackle them.
Maybe I will just call it a night and take a shot of something and go to bed. I don't want to end up with Husband's cold. With all the congestion, his voice has dropped at least two octaves. He kinda sounds like Barry White!
This morning was rather busy. Husband is home with a nasty cold. Thankfully, he is not one of those men who are completely helpless when they are sick. But, I can't help babying him just a little. :) I took the Boy for a long walk so that he would be quiet most of the day. It's funny how every patch of snow or every tree and bush has a scent that must be sniffed and or peed on!
Finally, I entered grading jail. I decided to work on my law class since I had already graded their final exam and all that was left was their research papers. Some of the papers were quite good. One student did a great job analyzing the Napster case. But, others went from average to just plain awful. They either lacked real insight, were full of errors and typos, or had serious issues with citation form. One student chose to use footnotes instead of what I asked them to use.
That's right, I said footnotes.
Now, I know that both MLA and APA allow footnotes of endnotes, although they discourage their use. But this paper was entirely cited using footnotes. This paper was filled with footnotes. The only place that I have used exclusive footnotes in in legal citation. That always bugged me during law school and when I was a practicing lawyer becuase I am sure the legal profession could come up with a better citation form.
(Note: This is an undergraduate law class. If they were in law school, I would ask them to follow legal citation style. )
Also, I am starting to get the emails asking for grades. I don't post or give out grades. I even have a sign on my office door stating that I don't give them out prior to the student receiving his or her grade report. The one and only time I did give out grades was a complete disaster. I had students complaining and wanting to challenge their grades before Christmas. The ones who didn't do a lick of work all semester want to do extra credit. The grade whores cry because they 'deserve" an A. The truth is, I just want some peace of mind between the time I submit grades and the time the students get them in the mail. That way, I am rested before the next round of whining begins.
Do you give out grades or post them before the students receive them in the mail? Talk among yourselves. I am going back for another round.
I took down my post about Michael Vick. I still stand by my anger about his receiving a mere 23 months in prison for what he did. As many of you know, I am a avid animal lover and have strong views about the laws regarding animal cruelty. I also have strong opinions about people who say "Oh, it's just a dog or just a cat." I spent this summer working to rehab cats and have seen firsthand the results of people who think hurting an animal is acceptable.
That being said, something that I did write was way out of line. Someone reminded me of that fact. Rape is a serious thing. As a twenty year survivor of rape, I still have memories of what happened to me. I would never think that it is funny or mean to suggest something like that in jest. Retribution is never the answer. Wishing that someone have that happen to them will not solve the issue or make it any better. It lowers one to the level of the offender.
My anger and forestation got the better of me. That is no excuse, but it does explain the behavior.
So, if I offended anyone, I sincerely apologize.
We now return to our regular programing.
- The genius who decided that this morning, the last day of classes was a perfect time for a fire drill should have the snot kicked out of them.
- I don't want to talk about my boys in Black and Gold, except to say that this ain't over and that paybacks are a bitch.
- Students are turning in papers today. Should be a slow morning. I just hope I don't have any more bold students.
- Speaking of that. I sent the student an email telling him that I will not accept his paper. I am preparing myself for the blow-back.
- I did grade all my law exams yesterday. Now, I have to tackle all those research papers and final essays. At least I can work from home the rest of the week.
I love this version of White Christmas, especially the reindeer back up singers.
Enjoy!
I gave a student in my law class a one day extension on his paper. I told him that I needed the paper by noon on Friday. Well, I get this email Friday morning where the student tells me that he was up all night, sick as can be. He said he was "dying". (Um, if you were really dying you would not be emailing me). He also said that he need just two more sources and his paper would be 'awesome". He wanted to turn his paper later that day.
I emailed him back explaining that I needed the paper by noon becuase I am on a deadline and besides, giving the extension is a courtesy that I don't normally grant. I finished by saying that I needed the paper in my hands or via email by noon.
I guess the guy can't read becuase he said "Well, I really want to give yo a great paper. So, I will give it to you later today or tomorrow at the latest.
All together now...ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!!!!!
Who in the hell does this guy think he is? He totally disregarded what I said and told me when he was going to submit the paper.
I sent him a second email which said that under no certain terms that I was to recieve the paper by noon or he would receive no credit. I left my office at 12:15. No one showed up with a paper and there was nothing in my email.
Around 3 PM yesterday, I checked my email. Guess what was in my inbox. The student's paper. Time on the email...2:30 PM.
GRRRRR. My urge to kill is rising.
I have not responded to the student yet. I am so pissed right now. The arrogance displayed here really grinds my gears. It's no wonder why I am such a jaded person. Every time I give someone an inch, they take ten yards. So, I end up being a very non-compassionate instructor because I can't trust anyone to do what I ask them to do. I mean what's next? I guess I will have to cease granting extension period, or make the student sign a contract.
I don't want to accept the paper. He did not do what we agreed to do. My policies are not open for negotiation. It is what it is. I supposed I could read it and see if he would fail outright anyway. But, it just seems wrong in my eyes.
Email from student:
I am not sure how to cite this particular source. Since the research paper is not due until noon, I will ask you during class.
Um...no. Your research paper is due within 15 minutes of the class start time which is WAY before noon. Your final exam is due at noon...next Monday. I guess you did not read the assignment when I gave it to you, or when I emailed it again to you...two days ago.
*Post title for the benefit of Husband.
One of my law students submitted a rough draft of a paper reaking of plagiarism. Not only did he copy word for word from one particular source without citing it, he took information from the same source and cited it under another author's name.
It took me only 15 minutes to find the document that he used. I went through it, highlighting the sections that he copied in his paper and noting the paragraph and line number in his paper. I sent him an email saying he needed to see me ASAP.
He eventually stopped by. I explained to him in a non accusatory way that I had serious issues about his sources. I explained that I checked his sources and it appeared that some are suspect. He just brushed it off as not knowing how to properly cite information.
Um...you're a senior and you don't know how to do WHAT?
I gave him the MLA guide that I give my freshman CT students. I also told him that I would look at another draft if he wished. I warned him that if his final paper was anything like his draft, he would fail the course.
My attorney-brain tells me that he realized that he got caught trying to be slick. The teacher portion of my brain tells me that it is entirely possible that he never learned proper citation form, or he was allowed to slide with improper or incorrect citations. I made a copy of his draft with my comments on it, just in case. I just hope he cleans up his paper.
Either way, I am frustrated. I hope that he just didn't know better.
Just Me tagged me for this one.

Here goes...
- When I was 19, I was given the children's menu at a restaurant.
- I don't heal very well from cuts or bruises. I have this black spots from old wounds, especially on my legs. It's embarrassing because they are visible and I have to cover them with special makeup when I bare my legs. Plus, I worry that people may think that Husband beats me when that is SO NOT THE CASE.
- Husband and I grew up in the same town and even went to the same high school. (He is two years older than me.) We did not know each other then. We met in college and realized that we had a similar circle of friends, like one of those six degrees of separation things.
- I can make popping noises with my jaw.
- I can belch on command and have won many a belching contest.
- In college, I worked as a security guard for events. What's weird about that is at the time, I probably weighed about 100 pounds soaking wet. So, I mostly checked bags and staked out the women's bathroom for illegal stuff.
- When I was 12, I punched a phlebotomist in the face because he kept jamming me with a needle and I am afraid of needles.
I am supposed to tag 7 people, but I think this one has been around. So, if you want to do it, have fun.
I just finished a round of CT essays on lethal injection. I thought I would share some "gems" with you.
- The electric chair was deemed a humane form of punishment.
- The death penalty has been a lifelong debate that has been around for decades.
- People can take on the job of an executioner and have no connection to the medical field. (I can see it now…Wanted. Professional Executioner. No medical experience needed.)
- Many executions were not done properly due to a lack of incompetence.
And I have another class yet to read!
Like Jimmy Buffett says "If we all didn't laugh, we would all go insane."
- I was sure that Baltimore would beat NE. My boys in Black and Gold get a crack at 'em next week. They have the best shot of kicking NE's ass.
- Sign seen on TV during the Steelers game on Sunday night. Five Rings...No Cheating.
- Today is another day where I will give my students a chance to seek help for their papers. I hope my other classes take advantage of the time.
- Prisca asked about my eval. I sent an email to the Dude. He should be sending me something this week.
- The Boy has a new girlfriend. Her name is Libby and she is a German Shepard. Libby has been pining for the Boy for some time now. He is just starting to reciprocate. Unfortunately, his method of showing his "love" sent him to doggie time out twice last night.
- It is really cold here. Plus, we had our first measurable snow.
- OK, time to get to work on grading. I have some CT essays to grade.
I got up way too late this morning. I love my boys in Black and Gold, but I can't take these Sunday and Monday night games.
This is going to be a light week. No teaching as I have given my students the time to work on their papers and use class time to meet with me with any questions or concerns. So far, I had five students from my early class stop by with questions and drafts for review. One student just stopped by to say hi because he felt weird not coming to class.
I am amazed that I had any students at all. Usually, I end up sitting around doing work or something. I just assumed that no one would seek help, so I brought my laptop with me to get caught up on stuff or just blog. They were actually waiting outside the classroom for me.
Will this trend continue with tomorrow's classes????

You are Garlic! No offence, but you stink. Pretty much everyone loves you, though. You're smart and pretty hot and you fit in with about any culture. You're a total cut-up; in fact, the more cut-up you get, the hotter you become. But be careful, when you get embarrassed, you turn really sweet.

About Me
- Seeking Solace
- I am a college professor who is fumbling through the chaos of academia, rheumatoid arthritis, working on my PhD and just being a 40 something woman. I used to be a lawyer, which made me a snarky little person. I have a wonderful Husband and a German Shepherd named Junior. They help keep me sane.
