Christmas Postscript

Posted by Seeking Solace |

I spent a lovely two days with Husband and the Boy. The Boy was too cute on Christmas day. He instantly knew which presents were his. I think his favorite is a stuffed Canadian goose with a squeaker that honks like a goose. He spent most of the day walking around with it in his mouth. Sometimes, he can be such a Lab! (FYI: The Boy is German Shepard-Lab mix)

Husband and I decided to go light on the gifts this year, mostly because there really wasn't much that either of us wanted. Husband thinks I spoil him! He is right of course. I love buying gifts for people! I think his favorite is this book. I also bought him some cold weather workout gear, so he can continue running, even when it's cold. I also bought him some clothes from Old Navy and some CDs.

Husband did a good job. He gave me:

  • "Cross" by James Patterson (I love the Alex Cross series!!).
  • Two piano books; one was a Sarah McLachlan song book.
  • "From This Moment On" by Diana Krall and "These Four Walls" by Shawn Colvin (Both great CDs!)
  • Fumbling Towards Ecstasy Live with Sarah McLachlan
  • This sweater and two V-neck tees from Ann Taylor Loft
  • Sweats and a hoodie for lounging
  • Body Shop stuff

Yesterday, we saw "The Pursuit of Happyness." I laughed. I cried. I felt better about my own circumstance. Go see it!!!!

Today, I am meeting LB for lunch. It will be nice to get out of the house with a good friend. Friday, Husband and I are traveling to Hometown to visit and exchange belated Christmas gifts. Plus, my dear best buddy, Piglet, and I will partake in our Boxing Day Shopping Spectacular, albeit a few days late.

It's getting a little better 'round here.

Christmas Meme

Posted by Seeking Solace |

Thanks to Addy N. for helping me get into the holiday spirit!

1. Eggnog or hot chocolate? hot chocolate with whipped cream
2. Does Santa wrap presents or just put them under the tree? Absolutely wrapped. I love to wrap presents. I probably should get a job as a gift-wrapper.
3. Colored lights on tree/house or white? Colored
4. Do you hang mistletoe? No
5. When do you put your decorations up? Usually as soon as I find the time to do it.
6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)? Stuffing!
7. Favorite holiday memory as a child? One year, my dad decided to get back at my brother for opening presents before anyone else. He locked my brother in his bedroom until 7 AM. Then, he made my brother wait until after breakfast and church before he could open his presents. It was about noon before my brother could enjoy his gifts!
8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? What truth?
9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? No, but Husband's family does. I think it sucks the fun out of the whole experience.
10. How do you decorate your Christmas tree? Lights, ball ornaments and beaded garland. And of course my Hallmark "Snoopy " ornaments. I get a new one every year. This year is Snoopy as the Legal Beagle!
11. Snow! Love it or dread it? Love it. Sadly, we will not have a white Christmas in Lake Effect Snow Central.
12. Can you ice skate? Yes. I used to take lessons as a kid. I used to be able to do some of those jumps you see on TV, with only one rotation. I would probably break my neck if I tried them now!
13. Do you remember your favorite gift? The Barbie Camper - 1974
14. What's the most important thing about the holidays for you? Spending it with family and friends.
15. What is your favorite holiday dessert? Sweet Potato Pie!
16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? We used to drive through the neighborhoods in my hometown to look at all the lights.
17. What tops your tree? A star with lights.
18. Which do you prefer, giving or receiving? Giving.
19. What is your favorite Christmas song? Anything from "A Charlie Brown Christmas"
20. Candy canes? Yep!
21. Favorite Christmas movie? "It's a Wonderful Life"

Why?

Posted by Seeking Solace |

I am at a place where I can talk a little about what happened. So here goes:

I posted that I was required to report to work on Wednesday, despite having all of my grades submitted. I was told that FW (Fuckwit for those of you who are new or forgot) was coming in to challenge the plagiarism. Plus, I, along all the other adjuncts, had not received my schedule for the next semester. So, I literally sat on my ass for most of the day.

Around 2 PM, the Dean called me into her office. She got right to the point in telling me that there were enough instructors to cover my courses and she was choosing not to renew my contract. The chill in her voice, was clear that this was not the entire reason. She began to give me some song and dance about enrollment for the next term being low. I told her that I could not help but think that the real reason had to do with a certain student (FW), and the two other cases of plagiarism that I found. (One case involved a student who was supposed to graduate this semester and needed my Survey of Law course to do so). She said that could not say if it was that, only that she was not going to renew my contract. There was no "I am so sorry" or "I wish I could have kept you". Nothing. It was cold, unsympathetic and unprofessional.

[Let me divert into a little primer on employment law. My status at the college is as an "at will" employee. As an "at will" employee, the employer can fire you for any reason without notice.]

So, I walked out of her office. I knew I was going to cry, so I headed to a stairway. I lost it. GML happened to see me and asked what happened. I told her and I just fell apart. A couple of other colleagues saw me and gave me comfort. Even one of my students saw the commotion and tried to help.

Just then, the Dean comes by and see me crying with my colleagues comforting me. She walks up to me and says "Seeking Solace, what is wrong?" Just like that.

I wanted to punch her in the mouth. I wanted to go off on her. I wanted to say "You insensitive bitch." "You just fired me and you have the balls to ask me such a stupid fucking question?" What kind of crack are you on?"I wanted to leave with some shred of dignity and professionalism, so I literally counted to ten and said "I will be fine." and I headed back to my work area to clear out my stuff. As I cleared out, I told some of my colleagues what happened. The shock on their faces was more than words could describe. And that was it. GML, LB and H helped my carry my stuff out to Husband who was waiting for me. I cried the entire way home.

The truth is, I know why I was fired. People can say what they want about numbers, enrollment, retention. or whatever buzz-word you want to use. I was fired because I set high standards for my students. I have ethics and integrity. I will not tow the line because it makes the college look good. I know it had more to do with FW and plagiarism than any of the bullshit the Dean tried to sell me.

And that is truly sad.

I feel like someone ripped out a piece of my soul. I feel like I am mourning a loss. Everyone keeps telling me that this is for the best. But right now, I just can't accept that rationale. Maybe in a few days, but not now. I am trying to sort through all of this. I cancelled my plans to visit family for the Christmas weekend. I don't want to deal with any of it right now. Plus, I have a horrible head cold. Talk about insult to injury. So, Husand and I are going to spend a quiet Christmas at home with the Boy and maybe travel to Hometown next weekend.

Words can not express my gratitude to everyone for their comments of sympathy and kindness about my job loss. You all are truly the best. Thank you so much!

Well, that's it. I don't have too much more to say right now.

Sigh...

Posted by Seeking Solace |

So here I sit. I finished writing two letter of recommendation for students. I am supposed to meet with the Dean about FW sometime this morning, but no one has indicated when.

Husband gave me one of my Christmases presents today. He figured that since I am stuck at work, I might as well have something enjoyable to read.

Just When You Thought It Was Safe To Do The End of Semester Happy Dance

Posted by Seeking Solace |

So I graded my last paper, dealt with all my plagiarism issues, calculated and doubled checked all of my grades and signed off on my grade reports. You would think that I would be doing the "I am done for the semester" happy dance. Right?

Oh, no my dear friends. That would be too easy.

Since tomorrow is still a class day, I still have to show up for work in case a student has a question. That's right, my friends. Even though my grades are turned in and none of my students have anything to submit, I have to show up for work tomorrow and Thursday and sit on my ass on the off chance that a student may have a question. Even though my students know that I do not tell them their grades and my college has a policy that prohibits the posting of grades, I have to go and sit from 8: 30 to 2:30 because a student may have a question or want to discuss something with me. What question could possibly come up remains a mystery and so far, no one has given a satisfactory example.

So, I thought to myself, "OK, I can work on my syllabi for the next semester, right? Wrong again. None of the adjuncts received their schedules for next semester. The administration will not tell us. They will not even give us an idea of what any adjunct will be teaching, even if you have taught the course in the past. Their reason? No clue. The administration keeps back-peddling and waffling. Many of my fellow adjuncts are seriously considering quitting because of this.

Oh and of course I can't forget FW. Yesterday, he met with the Dean to discuss his plagiarizing his paper for my class. He admitted that he did it. Case closed, right? You know where this is going! He called today to say that he is going to fight the charge and he is going to bring an English teacher with him to prove that I don't know what I am doing.

If this is someone's idea of a joke, I am so not laughing.

What Is An Instructor To Do?

Posted by Seeking Solace |

Addy N had a post about feeling guilty about the grade distribution in her courses. Why does it bother us as instructors if there are a few C's and/or D's in our courses? It almost seems personal. I am not sure why. I often wonder if I am being too hard or am I not requiring enough of my students.

How much control do we have when it comes to student outcomes? If a student chooses not to do the work, despite all of our efforts to assist him or her, should we just write them off? My gut reaction is yes. If you don't complete the work, then you deserve the consequence of a low or failing grade. Then there are those who fall into what I call the "hard C" category. The "Hard C" is those students who come to class, do the work, and get extra help. But the best they can do is a "C". You want to reward the fact that the student really tried, but at the same time, you risk the fear of grade inflation, which ultimately rewards the "D"and "F" students.

The administrators at my college seem to think that the lack of student success is the fault of the faculty. My colleagues and I are bombarded with "What have you done for the students lately?" Graduation rates a down, so in addition to our regular responsibilities, we have to track down the students in our classes to find out why they are not doing well. I teach at a small college with about 1100 students. It would be impossible for me to contact all of my students to find out why they are not doing what they are supposed to do. And, it's not my job.

I have a situation in one of my classes where two students attended regularly and completed any in class work that I assigned when I was absent. I have to have a substitute instructor either teach my classes or give the students busy work. Since not too many of my colleagues are qualified to teach my law classes, I am stuck giving the students busy work. That work was to be submitted upon my return. I use that work as extra credit toward the final grade. Well, there is one student who did complete any of the additional assignments. He also has not submitted a good portion of the course work. As a result, he has an "F" in my class. If I just give him the points that he would have received had he completed the extra assignments, he will pass. (70% is passing at my college). If I don't, he will receive an "F". I am torn, because this student is a pain in the ass and thinks that I treat him unfairly. I did not allow him to turn an assignment that was late because he had a questionable excuse and could not provide documentation to support it. So, do I just pass him to get him out of my hair, or do I fail him because it is not fair to the two that did the extra work?

I don't get any of it.

Urge to Kill Rising...

Posted by Seeking Solace |

Two more cases of plagiarism. One student did the usual cut and paste job. The other cut and paste sections from a website but cited it as a different website.

Plus, my Divorce Form Hell will continue into next year. Opposing counsel did not provide me with the information I need by the 4 PM deadline. So, I will have that hanging over my head.

LB just told me the FW is pissed because I busted him for plagiarism. He says he is going to bring an English teacher with him when he meets with the Dean to prove that I have no clue what I am doing.

Why I Live 300 Miles Away From My Family

Posted by Seeking Solace |

I don't blog much about my family. In the past, I have written about my dad and I mentioned that my mom has cancer. Honestly, I think the drama that goes on in my family could fill a whole separate blog or be plot in a Lifetime movie

But I have to blog about this.

My mom has this annoying habit of leaving cryptic messages on my answering machine. "Call me right away, it's important." Usually, it's not that urgent, but I am always afraid that it will be the one phone call where my mom does not cry wolf.

So, I call her, thinking that someone has passed away or is in jail. (Yes, I have family member who have serious trouble with the law. That's why I do not have a license to practice law in my home state. All my clients would be family members.) Anyway, here's the conversation.

Mom: K is pregnant again. She is due in January/ (K is my brother's baby's mama. My brother cheated on his wife, the end result being my Nephew, which my brother does not aw knowledge).
Me: So...
Mom: Well, this is her fourth child. (Nephew was the third) I can't believe she has four kids to four different men.
Me: Mom, you called to tell me this. I thought someone died or something.
Mom: Well, I thought you should know. How is Nephew going to deal with this (Nephew is three years old).
Me: Mom, I don't know. But, it is not our problem.
Mom: I spent the entire day crying over this.

When I finally calmed my mom down, I hung up the phone thinking "I could have gone the entire night without having to know this information." As soon as I got off the phone, Husband says "Let me guess...K is pregnant." "Someone get that girl some birth control!"

Honestly, did I really need to know that K is pregnant? I would probably figured it out when Husband and I stop by during Christmas to visit Nephew. And I am not going to get into the fact that K has another "baby's daddy."

Nothing like family drama at the holidays.

Pulling Through

Posted by Seeking Solace |

I have been in this funk for the past week.

  • The loss of GML's dog really hit me hard. Partly because I am a dog mom too. But, it took me back to when I had to put Duke to sleep five years ago after he was losing his battle with cancer. Even though I have dealt with the loss of a pet before, Duke's passing was very hard. So when GML's dog died, it brought back a flood of memories.
  • I am disgusted with the insensitivity of the people I work with. I think I mentioned that for our faculty luncheon, we are having roast beef (which I don't like) and chicken piccata (which I can't eat because the restaurant makes it with mushrooms). Then, they are serving red potatoes and garlic potatoes and a chef salad. I am not paying $10.00 to eat potatoes and a salad! I can't believe that my colleagues voted this way. So, I am not attending the luncheon as my form of silent-passive-aggressive protest. If GML is on campus, maybe she and I can do lunch. Besides, we can drink!
  • The Divorce From Hell is still alive and kicking. I found out that all judgements must be in the judge's chamber by close of business on the 18th. So, I have been frantically running around trying to get opposing counsel and the law guardian to get off their asses and sign off on the judgement, which I wrote to them about TWO WEEKS AGO and have been stalking them ever since. Then, there was this matter of my misplacing my copy of the trial transcript (VERY BAD!). I spent part of Thursday trying to get another copy. Today, I received opposing counsel's approval letter. Now, I am just waiting for the law guardian.
  • Grading, grading and more grading. 'Nuff said.
  • My right shoulder is almost non-functioning. I don't want to pull out the friend card with my chiropracter (she is a good friend and I have never used our friendship to get a rush appointment). But I am desperate! Drugs and Biofreeze only work for so long.
  • I still don't know what I am teaching next semester. All adjuncts at my college are pissed because we don't have our schedules yet. Retention is really down, so some of us may only have one or two classes. On a positive note, I got a call from Community College who said that my application is being forward to the CJ department.

So, in order to get de-funked, Husband and I are going out to a local tree farm and we are going to cut our own Christmas tree. Having an artificial is sacrilege in my house. Pre-cuts don't last as long. But, we always have fun.

Now, I just hope the lights work!

Last Class

Posted by Seeking Solace |

I just finished teaching my last class for the semester. One of the students in that class gave me a Christmas present. She gave me a beautiful candle. How sweet!

Now, I have to dive into the pile of research papers. Any suggestions on what to drink? I am thinking about Bailey's on the rocks in honor of the holidays!

It Pays To Study

Posted by Seeking Solace |

Last Monday, I had my Employment Law class draw numbers to determine who would be first for the oral exam. Average Student chose the first slot, Lazy Student Who Cheats chose the second, and Awesome Student chose the third. I told them that they would not know the questions in advance. I also told them that they would not get the same questions. Lazy Student's face turned white. He had this look of fear on his face. I had set up the exam so that he could not cheat his way through it. Plus, he could not press Awesome Student for answers. He would have to study.

Today was the exam. Average Student did quite well. Awesome Student did awesome, as usual. Lazy Student crashed and burned. I kept throwing him a bone to help him out, but it was clear that he did not study. He kept confusing the words "subjective" and "objective", so I had to stop and explain the difference. Later, Awesome Student stopped by to see me about a recommendation (which I was happy to give. I would clone her if I could). She told me that Lazy Student pumped her for information about her questions and bitched because Lazy Student thought that her questions were easier.

I have not completed their final grades yet. But, I really want Lazy Student to fail. I know that sounds bad and I know that I will see him again, but I don't think he deserves to pass. It will probably screw up my karma, but I can't help thinking that way.

Oh No He Didn't...

Posted by Seeking Solace |

FW submitted a paper filled with plagiarism. But what makes this so frustrating is that when he submitted his rough draft two weeks ago, I marked the sections that were plagiarized. I also had a discussion with him, reiterating what constitutes plagiarism and what he needs to do to fix the problem. I reminded him what the consequences would be for submitting a paper containing plagiarism. You would think after all of that, he would correct the mistakes.

Did I mention that his paper was about ethics in the accounting field?

It's 9:30 AM and already I need a drink.

For Zoey

Posted by Seeking Solace |

Sadly, GML's dog passed away yesterday. She had a massive tumor. She was only six years old.

There was no warning, no symptoms of a problem. No one could have predicted it.

There was still so much left to enjoy. So many years left...

How do you reconcile that? How do you wrap your mind around it?

Why now?

For GML, Zoey was more than a pet or a friend. She was part of who GML is, someone who gives of herself unselfishly, is always up for a good frolic and displays unquestioned loyalty. For GML, I think she lost a little of herself yesterday.

Many of you know "Rainbow Bridge" which was written to comfort those who have lost a beloved pet. I know deep down that Zoey is there, frolicking in a meadow and swimming in a pond with the sun shinning on her. That thought alone reassures me that all dogs do go to Heaven.

Godspeed, Zoey.

One of Those Days

Posted by Seeking Solace |

Only two out of eight students submitted research papers in my Critical Thinking class. FW submitted his, but he added "I don’t think I cited all my sources." Gee, do you think you should have checked that BEFORE you decided to submit the paper?

Student in my Employment Law class is still whining about the oral exam. I think for the first time, he is actually afraid that he may not pass my class. He is also mad because I will not accept an essay he submitted two days late.

We are having a faculty luncheon next week. We had to choose two entries with the top two being selected. The top two are chicken picatta and roast beef. I can't eat the chicken picatta because the restaurant makes it with mushrooms, which I am allergic. I can't pick them out either. And I do not like roast beef. So, I guess I will have to load up on veggie and salad.

My colleagues are not sensitive to the needs of others. One of my colleagues told me to just pick out the mushrooms. GML is a vegetarian and gets a great deal of grief because of it. She is not militant or judgmental about being a vegetarian, but she would like others to consider that there are people who would like a meatless option. Although I am a former vegetarian, I often opt for meatless option. (I think I mentioned before that I had to return to eating some meat after my RA diagnosis, just to get back in balance. I am considering going back o being a veggie.)

Speaking of GML, her pooch is very sick. She may need surgery. GML is really upset. Sending positive thoughts to you and your little girl!

My right shoulder is killing me. I dislocated it several years ago and it did not heal properly. Around this time of year, it is very painful from carrying my shoulder bag and sitting at the computer. I am on the cancellation list with my chiropractor. But it still HURTS. I guess I will have to break out the BioFreeze.

Santa Claws is Coming to Town!

Posted by Seeking Solace |

Christmas shopping is 90% complete. I have to go out an get gift cards for the older nieces and godchildren. I also have to buy wine for those who are getting the gift of a good buzz for Christmas.

I am picking out some things for the Boy for Christmas. Yes, I buy gifts for the Boy! He was a very good dog this year. Of course, he will have treats and toys, but I am thinking about a new bed for upstairs. He has one for the living room and one in our bedroom. Our bedroom has hardwood floors and since the Boy is getting a bit older (He is six), I am concerned about his joints. I did see a cool bed here which has heat and massage. Sweet. But I think I should have one of those before my dog! Drs. Foster and Smith have some nice ones that are orthopedic and have a bolster. The Boy loves having a bolster!

It All Started With A Phone Call...

Posted by Seeking Solace |

Telling me that the coffee machine was broken. That was 9:00 AM

And then it went downhill from there.

10:00 AM: Massive headache and no Tylenol. Plus, the coffee machine is still broken. Had to run to the store.

11:00 AM: I gave my Critical Thinking students a work day for their research paper. I told them I would be in the classroom if they wanted to meet with me. FW stopped by and asked me why I stated on his rough draft that a particular section was plagiarism. I explained to him that the information he used was not cited in the body of his paper or in his reference page. He claimed that he listed some dictionary as his source. I then explained that the source in question was the information regarding the Enron scandal. He then told me that he cited that source as a web page in the reference page. I told him that web-page that he cited was not the source for the Enron article, but another source properly documented in his paper. He then said "I guess the rumors were true. You do check EVERY source." (Don't worry, I made a copy of his draft and the website where he plagiarized...just in case)

11:30 AM: Student does not show up for his meeting with me. I guess he is OK with failing my class. (Thanks everyone for your input. I would have done a combination of both options.)

11:45 AM: One of my colleagues told me that a student in my law class has announced to her and other students that he intends to cheat on next week's oral exam. He plans to sit in the room and listen to the questions asked of the other students. He figured that I have to ask the students the same questions because it would not be fair. Of course I had already planed for such an event. I put in the information packet for the exam that I would be using the Dean's office for the oral and that students would wait in the Dean's reception area until I escorted them to and from the exam. Plus, any student found lurking around during the exam will receive an "F" and be subject to further disciplinary action. (I have spies who are working for me).

12:30 PM: Faculty meeting in which I, along with my colleagues, are reminded that the low retention numbers and the sudden increase in student absences are our fault. Faculty does not do enough to encourage the students to stay in class. Also, adjuncts are now required to attend faculty development seminars, which we are not compensated and there are no plans to compensate us in the future. Plus, adjuncts must attend their own faculty development meeting, which we will not be compensated for, in January when we have not even signed our contracts for the next semester. Then, senior adjuncts (like yours truly, are "encouraged" to act as facilitators.

1:30 PM: Massive headache, upset stomach (from the disgusting pizza and wings served at the faculty meeting) and cramps results in my ripping off the heads of my law class.

3:00 PM: I get cornered by a member of the administration to serve as a facilitator for the adjunct development. Felt to sick to work out.

3:30 PM: I realized that I forgot to write the take home exam for my Criminal Law class. They are supposed to get it tomorrow.

4:30 PM: Headed home, having not accomplished anything with the take home. My only consolation was big sloppy kisses from the The Boy, a nap on the couch until 6:00 and Husband with dinner cooked and a sympathetic ear.

8:30 PM: Still have not written the exam. Needed to vent. I guess I better get to work.

Calling All Academic Gurus!!!!

Posted by Seeking Solace |

Suppose you have a student who is failing your course. He is currently at 23%. There is a research paper and an oral presentation left to do, which is a combined 30% of his overall grade. Even if he earns a perfect score on the remaining assignments, he will still fail the course. The student wants to know what he needs to do to pass.

Do you:

  1. Find a polite way to tell him that he is screwed, or
  2. Encourage him to complete the work, making no promises of passing the course, but you know that he is going to fail?

You Know It's the End of the Semester When...

Posted by Seeking Solace |

  • Attendance drastically drops because student loan refund checks were distributed. (I call it "Check Day")
  • When you ask a student if they have an assignment that is due, he or she looks at you like you are speaking Swahili.
  • Only one student in a class of 15 turns in an assignment on time.
  • A student who has not attended class since mid October asks you what he or she has to make up.
  • A student who has not submitted any work all semester asks you what he or she needs to do to pass your class.
  • The dreaded "Do you give extra credit?" comes up at least once a day.
  • You need hard liquor to get through grading a stack of papers. (I use whiskey)
  • The number of papers you have to grade equals or exceeds the number of loads of laundry yet to be done.

Feel free to contribute!

Had to miss seeing the concert because my neck of the woods is in the middle of a nasty snow storm! (six inches and counting since 5 PM!)

FUCK!!!!

And we had such great seats too! We were within request distance! Hopefully they will do a second leg of their North American tour in the spring.

Hey Prisca, bet you don't miss the Lake Effect stuff!

An Oral Question

Posted by Seeking Solace |

I am thinking about giving an oral exam in my Employment Law class. I have a small class (three students), so I think it would work well. Plus, it would be interesting to see if they can think on their feet. I would tell the class what chapters and topics will be covered. No notes or outlines will be permitted. It would kind of be like an interview in which I will ask them about different topics, either by explaining a particular concept or asking them to respond to a hypothetical.

Have any of you used an oral exam for your content area? Do you have any comments or suggestions for me? Also, my college is big on rubrics (I hate rubrics), so if you have one, could I "borrow" it?

Update

Posted by Seeking Solace |

Thanks everyone for your concern regarding my water-logged basement. Luckily, there was no serious damage. We were able to get the important stuff out of harm's way, like the golf clubs and the Boy's food container! Poor Husband spent the time outside in the rain, trying to divert the water flow in the right direction towards the street. Meanwhile, I was sweeping the water the came into the basement towards the sump pump.

This is just another slap of crazy weather we have experienced lately.

Hey GML, what's next....locusts???

Friday Bullets of Crapola

Posted by Seeking Solace |

Holiday bullets:

  • My father-in-law has grown a mullet. That's right, a mullet! I am trying to figure out why a 65 year old man would even consider such a horrendous thing. One guess is mid life crisis. Someone asked me if he has purchased a Corvette yet. That leads me to my next guess which is he is too cheap! I have threatened to cut it while he is sleeping.
  • My mom is doing great with her cancer treatment. I think what has helped her is her cat, a beautiful Maine Coon cat. There is truly a link between animals and healing.
  • I was able to do some Christmas shopping while I was away. It helps that there is no sales tax on most items in Redneck-ville State.

Other bullets:

  • I am one step closer to finishing the divorce from Hell. I submitted the papers for the Judge's signature. Once I receive them, I can file them with the court clerk. Yippie!!!! Only one more month of malpractice insurance payments!!!!
  • It is raining like crazy here. It is supposed to change to snow tonight. I had to laugh at a Dallas woman I saw on the new yesterday. She was "afraid" of the snow. I told Husband that we should move there and bring winter gear and sell it. We would make a killing!!!
  • I had to knock some sense into a couple of my students in my Employment Law class. I have one student who is just phenomenal. She is an excellent student. She gets A's on all of her work, plus does any extra credit that is offered. She is the president of her honorary fraternity and an officer in other clubs. Plus, she is a divorced mom with six kids. She doesn't brag about her grades or complains about her life. But two students in my class know that she does well and they give her grief because they believe she is "killing the curve." One said something so disrespectful that I had to step in and address the issue. I told them that I don't grade on a curve, I have never graded on a curve and will never grade on a curve. I also told them that the grade you get is the grade you earn. You give crap, you get a crap grade. I also told them that treating this student they way that they do is not only disrespectful, but extremely childish, and if they continue to act like children, I would treat them as such.
  • Go here and vote to name the Atlanta Zoo's new baby Panda "Bright Star" after the lovely Bright Star!

From The "What The Hell Are They Thinking" Department:

Posted by Seeking Solace |

Another instructor covered one of my law classes on Monday. She told me that a student would not turn in his assignment that was due that day because I was not there. When the instructor reminded him that I do not accept late work, he said "Well, if she does not accept my assignment, I won't turn in my research paper."

And this hurts me, how??????

Message to student: Go ahead, don't turn in you paper. It's just one less piece of crap I have to read!

Reunited

Posted by Seeking Solace |

I'm back from my trip to my hometown. What a weekend!

The reunion was a blast. What was so amazing was the number of people who showed up. There were about 320 students in my graduation class and of that, about 100 showed up not including spouses or dates. I think there was about 150 in total.

Now for the good stuff...

Many people did not recognize me. Mostly because of my hair. Back then, it was short and curly. Now it is long and straight. I received many compliments on how great I looked. That dress really did me justice. I got a few double takes from guys who did not give me the time of day back then. What really made my night was when one of my classmates said that I looked like a goddess...SWEET!!! It also surprised many people that I am a college professor and an attorney. I was quiet and somewhat awkward in high school, so I guess they figured that being an attorney was the last thing they could see me doing. That will teach them to underestimate someone!

I was really happy to see my classmates from elementary school. I went to a private school from kindergarten to 6th grade. There were only 20 students in my class. As a result, we were a close knit group. Even in high school, when we drifted into different cliques, we still had that bond. So, it was great to reconnect with those folks.

The next day, my best friend, Piglet, and I had a "debriefing" over dinner. What we found was that many of my male classmates are bald. Not balding...just bald. Also, many of the "beautiful people" did not age well. Some looked about 10 years older than what there really were. For the most part, people were friendly and engaging. There were a few people who "snubbed" us. One in particular just looked right through Piglet when she tried to talk to her! I guess some people never grow up.

All in all, it was a great night. I am glad that I went. I felt vindicated by those who thought I would not amount to much and to those who thought I was not pretty enough. It also felt great to reconnect with people that I was friends with, but lost touch. I collect a bunch of e-mails and will be contacting them.

Next post about my long weekend will be a discussion of my father-in-law's mullet. That's right...a mullet!

Stay tuned!

Going Mobile

Posted by Seeking Solace |

I am leaving today to return to my hometown to visit with family and attend my high school reunion. Husband just left to take the Boy to his deluxe accommodations at the kennel that we use. The Boy really likes it there. Then, we have to finish packing, gas up the car and hit the road.

My in-laws have dial-up, so I doubt I will be blogging. But I will be back next week to tell you all about the reunion.

Have a great weekend!!!!!!

On This Thanksgiving

Posted by Seeking Solace |

I have so many things to be thankful for this year. I am thankful for...

  • The fact that I am here. I have a nice home, I am financially stable, I am relatively healthy and somewhat sane.
  • My husband who loves me when I don't love me, supports and encourages me and treats me like a woman should be treated.
  • The Boy who is the most lovable dog in the world. Even when I am sad, he know how to make me smile.
  • My mom surviving one year after her cancer diagnosis.
  • My blog-mates, both old and new, those that I have gotten to know off-line and those that I know through blogging. You are truly friends in my eyes.
  • My non blogging friend, especially Piglet (my best friend and soul sister),GML (One awesome gal who is my alter ego) LB (The voice or reason and wisdom), OGD (One righteous dude) Divorce Lady (Always up for an adventure) and Ellen (fellow blogger and a great friend)
  • The fact the semester is almost over.
  • My weight loss success (For those of you who don't read the Active Academic, I have lost 20 pounds since January!)
  • Husband and I surviving a very rough go back in October which sadly I cannot blog about.
  • Husband was able to keep his job with the company that bought his division of Old Company.
  • My Aruba vacation this year.
  • The fact that I can always go home.
  • Good food and good wine.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! And make sure you do not consume too much of that chemical that results in being sleepy, loss of energy, bloating, and lying around on the couch...ALCOHOL!!!!!

Score: SS: 1, FW: 0

Posted by Seeking Solace |

The big debate was on Monday. I waited until today to give you the full story, because the whole thing transpired over two days.

FW's team went first. FW was the team leader and was charged with the opening statement for his team. It was a disaster. He stammered and stuttered throughout the entire presentation. He also presented the first argument. It was clear that he was not prepared. His counterpart buried him in the rebuttal. In fact, the other team was better prepared and more organized than his team. His team was disorganized. In fact, two of his team members left critical information at home. He didn't bother to make copies for himself. He was a hopeless mess.

Since I ran this like a motion hearing, rather than a true debate, I took the importunately to ask him questions and challenge his argument. Seeing that he was somewhat defeated, I used kid gloves, but I ripped through each of his arguments, tearing them apart piece by piece. I pushed him to concede that his position was ineffective and ill-conceived. I had images of a submissive dog that rolls over and shows its belly when it knows it is not the Alpha dog.

Needless to say, his team lost. I asked two colleagues to act as co-judges so that there would be no complaints that I was being biased. My colleagues commented to me privately and to FW that his presentation was weak. Of course, he was not happy about any of this.

Ironically, Monday was the same day that the students had to evaluate me. After we finished, I gave the students the evaluations and left the room. I had a feeling that FW was going to blast me. Well, on Tuesday, one of my students from that class stopped to talk to me about an assignment for that same class. After we finished, she said "I thought you should know that FW was really mad that he lost." "He keeps whining that it was not fair that his team lost." She went on to say that he was so angry that he refused to fill out an evaluation! Can you believe that!!! If he wanted to get the last word, he could have done so with the evaluation. But no…he was too focused on being pissed off. What an idiot!

So today, I asked the class about what they learned from the entire exercise. FW was the first to raise his hand. He said that he should have prepared better than he did. He did not realize how difficult such an exercise can be. He apologized for not doing his best. Hmmm...

I still think he is full of shit. I still think he is immature snot. And I think I won this round.

Music Monday--Going Home

Posted by Seeking Solace |

Whenever I go home to visit my family, I get nostalgic for music that my parents used to play in the house. While my parents played all kinds of music, everything for pop to rock to country to gospel to even polkas (my mom is Polish), the music that always makes me think of home is the R&B/Soul sounds of the 1970's. I can still remember sitting around the console stereo as my father would sing to me. One of things I love about 70's R&B/Soul was that live orchestras were used in the background. The sound was so authentic. I think that is what is missing in today's music...uthenticity.

So, here is Monday's Playlist in honor of my going home this weekend

1. Sweet Love by the Commodores
2. I'll Be Around by the Spinners
3. Back Stabbers by the O’Jays
4. The Love I Lost by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes
5. Ain't No Stoppin’ Us Now by McFadden and Whitehead
6. Killing Me Softly by Roberta Flack
7. So Very Hard to Go by Tower of Power
8. Neither One of Us by Gladys Knight and the Pips
9. Always and Forever by Heatwave
10. Could It Be I’m Falling in Love? by the Spinners
11. Everybody Plays the Fool by the Main Ingredient
12. If You Don't Know Me by Now by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes

What to Wear???

Posted by Seeking Solace |

I went shopping yesterday for an outfit for my 20th high school reunion which is next Saturday. The event is "casual". I was having the worst time trying to decipher what "casual" means anymore. One of my classmates told me she bought a cocktail dress. Crap.

I ended up at the Ann Taylor Loft. After about an hour of trying on stuff, I ended up buying two outfits. I honestly could not decide between the two.

Outfit #1

Outfit #2 (With a cream cami and without the belt).

Both are very cute. I like the idea of the little black dress. The sweater and pants could transfer into my work wardrobe.

Still have to find shoes, although GML suggested I wear my red slingbacks with the black dress.

The kicker was the bill. Let's just say I spent WAY too much.

ETA: Husband likes the little black dress for the reunion. But, he thinks I should keep both outfits. When I told him how much I spent, he replied "Well, you have worked so hard with your workouts, you really deserve it!!!" What a guy!!!!

The Fuckwit stood up in class today and apologized for anything that he may have said or done that may have offended me or anyone in the class. He also promised that he would not be a further disruption.

Hmmm. I don't buy it completely.

I will try to take him at his word, while making sure my back is protected at all times.

Sunday Bullets of Crapola

Posted by Seeking Solace |

  • I just can't watch my boys in Black and Gold get their asses handed to them again. It is not worth losing my voice again. I do have the TV volume up so I can listen while I work. (ETA: They won! Woohoo! Maybe there is a glimmer of hope...)
  • I did get a great deal done this weekend. I got caught up on all the filing and shredding that has not been done since March. It took about two hours to organize and file all the bills and tax crap. The house is relatively clean. Laundry is almost done.
  • I finished my lecture notes for Employment Law for the entire week.
  • I am almost caught up on grading. My Employment Law class did a fabulous job on their midterm.
  • Local community college is hiring adjuncts and full time faculty for their Criminal Justice program. I am going to apply, but I am not sure if I should make the lateral move or jump in for a full time position. Either way, the money is WAY better than what I am getting now.
  • Tomorrow, I have to deal with the Fuckwit. Sigh. I wish I could kick him out of the class, but my college will not let me do that. The students have the power and they know it.
  • Two more weeks until the reunion and I still don't know what I am going to wear. I am getting my hair trimmed and the color done of Friday, so maybe I will do some shopping.
  • I hope I have not gained any significant weight as a result of the RA flare. I have not worked out in a week. Plus, I have been eating Cool Ranch Doritos like mad. (But they are sooooo good!)
  • I am racking my brain for a Christmas gift for my mom. What do you buy someone who is extremely cheap (if you bought the item at a place other than Big Lots or the Flea Market and it was more than a dollar, it's too expensive), does not like anything, will not use a gift certificate for any movie, restaurant or spa treatment and insists that you buy her nothing? And no Jelly of the Month club either!

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The Midland

"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

Rising

Posted by Seeking Solace |

Thank you everyone for your kind words and encouragement. You are the best. I can truly say that you are great friends and confidants! I had a long talk with Husband, who tends to be my voice of reason when I think I am losing my mind. I also have the support of GML and LB and OGD, who are not only colleagues, but great friends. I know they have my back.
I am doing better today. The flare has settled down significantly. I vowed that I would not resort to steroid treatment to get through the pain. Although it would help, I just can't do it. I have worked so hard to get in shape and lose some of the weight that I have gained over the last five years as a result of the RA and its effects. I truly believe that my new healthy habits and exercise routine have helped me through this.

I think Weezy hit the nail on the head. As faculty, especially in the case of adjuncts, you really can't win. If you do too little, you don't care about the students. If you speak up about things that appear to be wrong, you are a maverick. If you do a good job, it's never enough. If you set high, yet reasonable, standards, you are being mean to the students. At my college, the message is that if there are problems, it's the faculty's fault. They are not doing enough to pacify the students.

I am not sure what is going to happen when I return next week. Husband and GML think that I will be fine and nothing will happen to my job. Husband pointed out that even if I were to lose my job, it would not be the end of the world. Well, maybe for my college because they would lose a great instructor who the majority of the students enjoy and respect. But the bottom line is that I will be OK.

Fear

Posted by Seeking Solace |

I have been dealing with some heavy stuff lately. The stress of it all has led to a pretty bad RA flare. (Stress will do that). Today is much better in that it does not hurt that much to type. I still have some trouble walking,.

I so want to talk about what's going on. But, I am afraid that I might give away to much and identify myself. Maybe I am being a bit paranoid, but given what I have been dealing with, I am extremely guarded. It seems that when I have either opened up or sought guidance, it has come back to bite me in ways that you cannot imagine. It has gotten to the point where I am afraid to ask or question anything that goes on at my place of employment. I cannot engage in confidential conversations with colleagues regarding student issues without fear of extreme blow-back. I am in fear for my job.

I hate this. I feel like no one seems to get it. Maybe, I don't get it.

The Last Word

Posted by Seeking Solace |

The little fuckwit in my Critical Thinking class is at it again. When I began to explain the debate project, he said "I heard you talked to the Dean about me and that you were scared of me."

Scared of him...yeah right. I told him that I decided to change to project in order to benefit the entire class and that it had nothing to do with his false assumption of fear on my part.

He just smirked.

What chaps my ass is not that he thinks I am scared of him. Please, I am not afraid of piss-ants. What bothers me is how he could be privy to a private conversation between me and my boss. I did discuss the issue with a couple of colleague, but I don't believe that any of them would do such a thing. (I hope I am not being naive.)

I did get the last word. I gave out midterm grades today. Guess who earned a big, old, fat "F"??????

Friday Bullets of Crapola

Posted by Seeking Solace |

  • I am so sick of election ads. I counted six in a row last night.
  • Speaking of the election, there should be a "None of the above" choice or "Anybody but these two losers" choice.
  • This weekend I will be in grading mode. Midterm grades are due. Better stock up on liquor.
  • Today, I might do some shopping. I want to look for an outfit for my reunion. The dress is casual. But, "casual" is pretty vague. I want to comfortable, but look fab.
  • "Living on a Prayer" was the #1 song in VH1'a 100 Greatest Songs of the 80's. I think it should be in the top 10, but #1? I would have chosen something from U2's Joshua Tree. I am surprised that it was not something from Madonna or Michael Jackson.
  • Shout out to Shelly. Hope all is OK.

The 80's Just Won't Die!

Posted by Seeking Solace |

Anyone out there watching the Top 100 Songs of the 80's on VH1? I found it odd the "Every Breath You Take" by the Police was at number 47!

What the Hell? That should so be in the top ten!

It Ain't Over 'Till the Big Dog Howls!

Posted by Seeking Solace |

I think I found a solution.

I spoke with the new Dean of Instruction about my dilemma. Unlike the previous dean, this dean is very supportive of faculty and provides a good sounding board for issues. She surmised that the fuckwit will gain nothing from a "debate" with me. Also, it will not benefit the class in any way. She suggested that I find a way to have my cake and eat it too. Teach the little snot a lesson, while engaging the class in an activity that will meet the course outcomes.

I decided that entire class could benefit from and exercise where they must create and defend a position. So, I am going to have the students participate in a debate each presenting a case in which they must create and presents arguments based on a hypothetical case I created. Yours truly will be the judge. I know the fuckwit will want to be in charge of his legal team, so he will have to convince me that he is right. (HA! Good Luck!) Plus, I can mess with him, challenging his arguments and make his life a living Hell. If he gets out of line, it will impact the grade he receives on the assignment. Hit him were it really hurts, right in the GPA!

I am sharpening my fangs as we speak! Of course, I will keep you all posted.

Halloween and Headaches

Posted by Seeking Solace |

My head is throbbing right now. Not a migraine, but still. Trick-or-Treat night is hard on dogs. When you enter my house, the foyer has another door that leads to the living room. We keep that door closed. Because of that, the Boy can't see who is at the front door or dart out. But, the constant ringing of the doorbell made him go crazy with barking. At one point, he just sat there, staring at the door, waiting for the bell like Pavlov's slobbering dog. Imagine that for three hours.

Antoher thought, What is up with 14 and 15 year olds Trick or Treating????

Also, I am in one of those moods where I don't want to be bothered or deal with people, especially students right now. Maybe it's midterms, I am not sure. Between the fuckwit in my Critical Thinking class and the overall level of laziness of the majority of my students, I just don't feel like being very cordial or supportive of them right now.

I am unsure of what to do with the fuckwit. Husband suggested that I just let it go. I have nothing to prove. But I think he misses the point. It's not about my having to prove anything to anyone. It's about teaching this guy about proper argument technique. Also, it you disrespect someone in power, you better be ready to deal with the consequences. And, you don't mess with women, especially talented, highly educated women.

But at the same time, I wonder if I do clean his clock, if he will go cry to the administration. One of my colleagues told me that a student, whom she would not identify, indicated to her that I have a tenancy to play favorites when it comes to my students. This colleague informed the person that such an idea was WAY off base. I did not ask who said this, and I would not press her into telling me. But I wonder if it is the same fuckwit. So that gives me pause.

Crud. All of this is making my headache worse.

How Did I Get into this Mess in the First Place????

Posted by Seeking Solace |

There is a student in my Critical Thinking class who is quite a piece of work. In a discussion about whether states should require couple to seek counseling prior to marriage, he boldly stated that the only reason he married was for the gifts and the free honeymoon. He did not love his wife and they soon divorced. I said I found it rather sad that he viewed marriage in that way. He replied that I should be nicer to male students.

What the hell, dude??? You volunteered the information, so don't criticize the feedback.

Later in the discussion, we turned to the issue of whether courts should entertain lawsuits that reward people for their voluntary behavior. We were discussing the similarities and differences between the tobacco lawsuits and the obesity lawsuits. This same student began to argue the fast food was more dangerous that smoking. While his premise was interesting, his evidence to support it was extremely weak and lack sense or substance. When I tried to challenge him, he became very defensive, claiming I was "picking on him." Then he said the following:

"I wish I could go up against you in a legal case. I would totally beat you. You are just a woman."

He was totally serious.

On the one hand, I admire his moxie, but at the same time, doesn't he realize that I am a trained trial lawyer? I would mop the floor with him.

I don't want to come off as being arrogant. That is not what I am about and I apologize to my readers if I am sounding that way right now. But, I want this guy to learn the art of critical thinking and debate, but I also want him to understand that you do not treat woman or anyone in authority in a disrespectful way.

I could accept the challenge and take this young man to school, or I could be the bigger person and decline. What makes things worse is that word about what happened is all over campus.

How did I get into this mess in the first place????

Don't Assume

Posted by Seeking Solace |

There are three students in my Employment Law course. Two are wonderful, hard working students who really care about their work. The third is a slacker who rarely attends class or does any work.

Slacker Student had not attended class since the end of September. I asked the other students in my Employment Law class if they have seen him. One student told me that he has attended his other classes. When I asked if he said anything about mine Slacker informed this student that he assumes that I will accept his late work, since I gave him an extension for a project last semester.

Excuse me?? But don't extensions have an expiration date on them???

What's worse is that when you assume, you make an ass out of a dyslexic emu!

Since I have free time on Monday mornings to grade or do other stuff, I often have my Ipod on shuffle to drown out the chaos and disorder around me at work.

It was pretty mellow for a Monday.

Losing My Religion?

Posted by Seeking Solace |

Husband left for Mass a little bit ago. I have not gone in a few years. Every once in while, I get this ping of guilt, like I should go. But I just can't bring myself to do it.

I have this love-hate relationship with Catholicism. I think it started in the eighth grade when I was preparing for Confirmation. We were shown a film that depicted an abortion in graphic detail. Then, we were told what horrible things God would do to if any of us even considered such a thing. What a way to convey a message. The instructors probably figured that we would be scared into supporting pro-life. For me, it did the opposite. I felt like I was being told "Believe or else". I did not like that.

The Catholic church I attended during college was a little more progressive. I guess it would have to be, seeing that it was on a college campus and all. The rhetoric was the same, but not to the same intensity that I experienced in my home parish. It seemed like I found my way back.

When Husband and I were preparing for our wedding, we decided to get married in his parish. Husband is Byzantine Catholic. The wedding ceremony is rich with symbolism, which is what drew me to having the wedding in Husband's church. Later, I learned that we HAD to get married in the Byzantine Rite because the Byzantine Rite is a tad bit territorial. On top of that, Husband's priest was totally "old school". He insisted that we have the vow that states "Wives must be submissive to their husbands." I argued with the priest that there was NO WAY I was going to recite that garbage. Of course, this was dumped on me a week before the wedding, so I had no way of backing out and finding another priest or church. So I recited the offensive vow. But in true Seeking Solace fashion, I said "NOT" at the end. (It was audible and on tape!)

Since moving to Lake Effect Snow Central, my Mass attendance has been sporadic. Our parish has gone through many priests. Some were old school, which resulted in my boycott. One was really cool. His motto was "Mass in 30 minutes or it's free." His homilies were basically "Be good, For the love of God, just be good." No fire and brimstone. But, he was soon replaced with Father G, who is old school and LOVES to remind us that we need to give more money.

Someone asked me if I ever thought about changing religions. I dabbled in Buddhism for a while. Sadly, I got some heat from family. Plus, I saw what family can do when you stray from the norm. My best friend, Piglet, converted from Catholicism to Non Denominational before her wedding and family members treated her like she joined Al Qaeda! Husband thinks I should not give up on Catholicism. He feels that it's the Church that has to change, not him. Let the Church drive him out.

I wish I could think like that. I have a strong faith, but my flesh is rather weak.

Sick Blogging

Posted by Seeking Solace |

  • Feeling a little better. It's mostly in my throat and sinuses.
  • I know I have said this before, but daytime TV sucks. Yesterday, I did watch Rachel Ray, who had a cool seafood recipe. But everything else is just bad.
  • I watched Oprah with Bill O'Reilly. I swear the one guy in the audience with the dark hair and the dark blue shirt could have been Publius! (Was it??? Come on, you can fess up here!)
  • I looked at every catalogue in my house. At least I got some ideas for Christmas.
  • The Boy does not understand that when Mom is sick, that is not the time to incessantly bark at the critters in the backyard.
  • Also, the Boy hates having his feet wiped after being out in the mud. It's always a wrestling match.
  • Husband and his work buddies engaged in Hog Fat Friday. They consumed a whole rack of ribs, plus a half a pound of bacon...EACH. What a bunch of pigs!!! (pun completely intended!)
  • Meds kicking in. Nap time!!!!

Out of the Mouths of College Students

Posted by Seeking Solace |

These gems were found in essays written by a few of my Critical Thinking students. I swear I am not making this up!

"Mary never had no altercation with the law before."

"She didn't have no reason to mess up her life even more."

"Mary was being prostitute was getting beat by her pimp." "She could have told her coworkers that were out there with her at the time."

It's going to be a long semester.

Because I Need to Bitch...

Posted by Seeking Solace |

  • Things have been a little crazy here, weather-wise. My backyard is soaked with water and mud. The Boy just had to chase a squirrel and come back covered in mud. He tracked mud through my kitchen and almost made into the living room when Husband tackled him. Husband gave him a bath in the basement while I cleaned the floors in the kitchen. (Shout out to the folks who make the Swiffer Wet Jet...you are a dog mom's best friend!)
  • Because of the mud issue, I am re-thinking about getting rid of the carpet in my living room and dinning room. I think there is hardwood under the carpeting in those rooms. It's much easier to keep clean, especially with the Boy.
  • When is it going to stop raining here? (Hey GML...What's next? Locusts???)
  • Husband and I bickered this morning. He has this crazy idea of putting all of the sporting equipment in the guest room closet so that if the basement floods, such items will be protected. Um...there is not that much room in that closet. Plus, what would our guests think when they see camping equipment in the closet?
  • Local NFL team just plain sucks. Do you guys have your heads up your asses for comfort or because you like the smell?
  • Why are boots so damn expensive?? I need new dress boots but I don't know if I want to spend over $100.00 for something that is going to take a beating with the weather. On the flip-side, I don't want to replace boots every winter.
  • I have to go work on Monday...crud. Nothing prepared yet...crud!

ETA: My boys in black and gold lost AGAIN! AND IT'S LIKE A MONSOON OUTSIDE!!!!!!

Random Bullets of Crappola

Posted by Seeking Solace |

  • Husband's 40th birthday is next Wednesday. No party. No fanfare. He just wants a quiet celebration with me. It's not that he is dreading the big 4-0, he's just not into anyone making a big deal about it.
  • I ordered his present, but I can't say what it is because he reads my blog! But he is going to like his gift. Plus, I am taking him out to dinner.
  • I need to go jeans shopping. As a result of my workouts, I can't keep my pants up! It's a good problem to have, but I hate shopping for jeans. I have a small waist, but I have hips and junk in the trunk, which means that any pants I buy swim on my waist because I have to fit my hips. Any suggestions out there?
  • I wish it would stop raining
  • I need a spa day! (GML...when can we go?????)
  • Tonight is takeout night. I am thinking pizza, New York style.

Ethics Be Damned!

Posted by Seeking Solace |

During my Criminal Law lecture today, one of my students asked me if it was possible to get a job in the Criminal Justice field if one had a criminal record. I told the student that most careers in Criminal Justice require a background check and licensing. As a result, a person cannot have a criminal record. The student told me that no one in Admissions told him this little bit of information and if he had known, he would have chose a different major.

What the hell is wrong with these admissions people? Don't they realize that they are setting the college up for some serious liability issues? Suppose a student gets a criminal justice degree, pays all that money in tuition and fees and cannot get a job because of a criminal record. That is pure negligence on the part of the school. It seems to me that the college has an ethical duty to inform students of the possibility of their past interfering with their future. But no, the admissions people only care about the numbers. Anything else is the faculty's problem.

So I guess I will fire off an email to the chair of the program and hope he will light a fire under the asses of the admissions folks. But it still pisses me off that my college spouts out all this crap about students acting in an ethical way when the people in charge cannot grasp the concept.

I Give Up

Posted by Seeking Solace |

It drives me crazy how easily students give up when they are given a challenging task. They either roll over or refuse to do the task or whine and complain about how stupid the task is. They are not willing to try or even to THINK.

Case in point. I covered LB's Financial Analysis class. The students were given an assignment to help them get started on their research paper. The assignment was to be completed using the computer. It asked the student about certain resources and why those resources would be helpful with their paper.

Well this one student just threw her hands up in the air, stating that it was too hard and she was not going to do the assignment because she did not know what a particular word meant. I suggested that she Google the word. But that was just too hard for her. She asked if I could do it for her. My response was "Your hands seem to be working properly. I think you can handle this." She let out a heavy sigh and went back to work.

I guess she was afraid that if she thought out the problem, her brain would explode.

Running the Gauntlet

Posted by Seeking Solace |

If one more person asks me if I am OK, I am going to scream. Only my boss, GML and LB know what happened. I know they mean well, but I am trying to move on from the panic attack incident. Constant questions do not help.

So I'll just smile and say "I'm fine."

Sigh.

Time Heals Everything...I Hope.

Posted by Seeking Solace |

So my hiatus is over. I bet you're wondering what happened.

Well, I had a panic attack. I have experienced them before, but this was the first one in a very long time. After the attack subsided, I could still feel my heart fluttering. I do have a mitral valve prolapse (sticky heart valve). So those two issues made me get to my doc, pronto. She did an EKG which was normal. The beta-blocker that I take was doing its job. But the whole thing was pretty scary.

What triggered it? I guess you could chalk it up to emotional overload; a stress filled week combined with a case of chronic open mouth-insert foot syndrome. Ever have one of those weeks where anything you say or do results in extreme blow back? Well, that was it for me. But damn, it should not have resulted in something so intense. I mean, we all have bad weeks. And in the grand scheme of things, last week was pretty tame compared to others. I have experienced weeks where I just wanted to lock myself in a room, curl up in a ball and cry. This was not one of those weeks. But the voices of inadequacy crept back in when I wasn't looking.

I needed time. Time to get my shit together and regroup. I did not turn on my computer. I did not watch much TV. I did not work and any school stuff. I just mellowed out, went for walks with the Boy, banged away on my piano, singing at the top of my lungs and thought about what I needed to take away for all of this

I work in very close quarters with my fellow faculty members. Normally, I try not to get caught up in the chaos and drama. But I let my guard down. I concerned myself with things that I can't control. I allowed my emotions to get the best of me. What I realized is that I need to steer clear of the drama, even if it means surgically attaching my IPod to my ears. It's not being anti-social, but I just need to protect myself. It is not my job to change the world. I just can't do it anymore.

I don't know if I will ever have another panic attack. But I don't think I will give so away so much of myself again.

I Don't Need A Babysitter

Posted by Seeking Solace |

Riddle me this Lords and Ladies of Academia. Why does an institution who claims to be a college, require that if an instructor is going to be absent, the instructor must find a substitute to teach her class instead of just cancelling it?

Because of my migraine last Thursday, I had to find someone to "teach' my law classes. Now there are only one or two people who are qualified to cover my courses and could pick up my lesson. But for the most part this is not the case. So, I have to give "busy work". How lame is that? The person covering the course does get paid to baby-sit.

I have voiced my opinion on many occasions but I am wondering if my colleagues don't like to question authority, which is usually the case, or they just don't care.

It is too bold of me as an adjunct to raise the issue with the new Dean?
