So the summer session has started already at my college. I only had a week off between semesters. Not much time really. Having a trimester system can really suck. While most of you are dying for the semester to end, I am dreading the beginning of the semester!
I am teaching a new course this semester called Law and Ethics. It’s a combination of Critical Thinking and Law. It should be interesting. I am thinking about having the students conduct a mock trail. We shall see.
Well, back to work…

- I am a college professor who is fumbling through the chaos of academia, rheumatoid arthritis, working on my PhD and just being a 40 something woman. I used to be a lawyer, which made me a snarky little person. I have a wonderful Husband and a German Shepherd named Junior. They help keep me sane.

Wow, I can't believe that your vacation is over so soon! That sucks, but at least you can keep thinking about Aruba. :)
Hope your semester goes well. Your course sounds really interesting...
I don't envy you your schedule. Especially with most of the rest of us out here celebrating the ending of the semester!
The course does sound good. I'd like to take it myself.
I love the idea of a mock trial -- my students really liked the presentations we did -- especially when the alternative was an exam. Mock trials are good because their structure allows some people to do more research and others to do more talking. It is also competitive -- and they LOVE that.
I don't know what your level of experience is or what level you teach -- but especially if you are a two year school, you should contact local four-years or law schools to see if their mock trial team would like to do a service project helping your students set it up.
The other option would be to have a series of debates on course materials... they are a bit easier to organize, but each team has fewer members so you have to do more debates.
Good luck -- once they get the hang of the project, they'll love it.
